In a tiny brick house on Baltimore’s North Amity Street in 1833-1835 Edgar

Allan Poe wrote some of the early stories that would make him the father of the modern short story, and create and define the modern genres of mystery, horror and science fiction. **Demolition moves closer to Poe House next week.**

We have now received a professional scope for vibration and crack monitoring during the work immediately surrounding the museum: approximately $12,000–$25,000, depending on the demolition timeline.

This cost is additional to our Emergency Preservation Campaign.

There is an obvious question in all of this: why is it the museum that has to pay for the monitoring? It’s a good question, one for which we do not have a good answer, but the responsibility has still fallen to us to protect this historic landmark. As stewards, we take the responsibility seriously.

Thanks to you, Stand Guard for Poe House has reached 33% of its goal. As demolition moves closer, your support is helping us protect this irreplaceable Baltimore landmark through the work ahead.

Help Stand Guard for Poe House:

Would you be open to converting your generous one-time gift of into a recurring monthly contribution? Regular support enables us to better focus on our mission.
