The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) is directly responsible for meeting the statutory mission of promoting economy, efficiency, and effectiveness in the administration of Social Security Administration (SSA) programs and operations and to prevent and detect fraud, waste, abuse, and mismanagement in such programs and operations. To accomplish this mission, we direct, conduct, and supervise a

comprehensive program of audits, evaluations, and investigations relating to SSA's programs and operations. We also search for and report systemic weaknesses in SSA programs and operations, and make recommendations for needed improvements and corrective actions.

The SSA Office of the Inspector General's Spring 2026 Semiannual Report to Congress has recently been published. This report showcases the impact of our efforts to protect Social Security programs and taxpayer dollars.

During this reporting period, SSA OIG achieved:

A recent audit by SSA OIG has identified deficiencies in how court-ordered restitutions for fraud are recorded and monitored. The review found that while many cases were handled correctly, about 35% of sampled cases had issues, leaving approximately $1.1 million in outstanding balances uncollected. The OIG estimates that up to $18.6 million in restitutions may not have been properly recorded or monitored. The report also noted that some individuals did not receive required overpayment notices. After a three-day trial in Pocatello, a federal jury found an individual—whose true identity remains unknown—guilty of wire fraud, theft of government funds, aggravated identity theft, and related charges. Evidence showed the defendant used the identity of a deceased Los Angeles resident for over two decades to fraudulently obtain approximately $283,000 in government benefits, including SSI, Medicaid, SNAP, and Economic Impact Payments. A Guam resident was sentenced to 6 months in prison for theft of government property after unlawfully receiving $58,248 in disability benefits over several years. The individual continued to collect benefits intended for a deceased family member, using the funds for personal expenses. A Florida resident has been sentenced to over two years in federal prison for aggravated identity theft, false representation of a number, and making a false claim of U.S. citizenship for employment purposes. According to court documents, the individual used another person’s identification to obtain employment and falsely claimed citizenship status, successfully bypassing the E-Verify system.
