nate country residence of two generations of Baltimore’s Garrett family, is celebrated for its holdings of Asian arts: porcelains, lacquer wares, and netsuke (miniature carved ivories); European paintings—including works by Edgar Degas (1834–1917), Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920), and Ignacio Zuloaga (1870-1945); American art glass — the majority of pieces assigned to Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933); and the John Work Garrett Library of rare books and manuscripts. This eclectic house-museum also features costume designs, drawings, and a mesmerizing private theatre designed by celebrated Russian émigré Léon Bakst (1866-1924), best known for his set designs for the Ballet Russes. Also of note are the career drawings of regional architect Laurence Hall Fowler (1876-1971); murals by Mexican-born artist Miguel Covarrubias (1904-1957); and paintings by Frenchman Raoul Dufy (1877-1953). The collections of Evergreen afford a unique perspective regarding the evolution of American collecting taste and connoisseurship, from the country’s post-Civil War industrial revolution to the modern jet age.

Even when on vacation, Evergreen Museum & Library never strays far from our staff's mind. While touring the Art Institute of Chicago, staff made sure to visit some of the artists that both institutions share.

A docent and a tour group of nine people stand outside the museum under a wrought iron canopy attributed to Tiffany Studios. The canopy and a Japanese maple tree shade the group while the docent addresses them as they prepare to enter the museum.

These are the final days to see Rare Air: Endangered Birds, Bats, Butterflies & Bees. The exhibition features biologically accurate pen-and-ink drawings by artist Sarah Kaizar with with rare books and decorative arts from Evergreen’s collections. The exhibition is open during regular museum hours, Tuesday-Sunday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.

Congratulations to James Smith, Evergreen's 2026 intern with the Bloomberg Summer Internship program (). James, a rising senior at the Baltimore Design School, presented his end-of-internship project yesterday, an individually researched and written abbreviated version of Evergreen's tour. Great job, James! Best of luck with all your future endeavors.

Since it began in 2012, the Bloomberg Arts Internship (BAI) program has supported over 2,250 paid internships at more than 250 cultural organizations and maintains an active alumni network. The program helps rising public high school seniors develop the skills and give them the tools they need through work experiences at select cultural institutions, as well as work-readiness and college-preparation training.
The Johns Hopkins University Museums have hosted BAI interns since the program launched in Baltimore in 2016.
