Urgent Public Safety Advisory regarding Telephone Fraud
The Baltimore Police Department has been alerted to a recent surge in fraudulent phone activity within our community. Residents report receiving calls from individuals posing as deputies claiming that the recipient has an outstanding warrant, unpaid fines, or unresolved legal matters.
To appear credible, these scammers often reference legitimate past court activity—such as traffic violations—harvested from public records. They frequently employ high-pressure tactics, demanding that victims remain on the line while purchasing Amazon gift cards or delivering cash to a secondary location. Furthermore, they may use the names of actual local deputies and "spoof" their caller ID to display "Fairfield County Sheriff." They will also say that you will be arrested if you go to the Sheriffs Office to try and pay.
Please be advised: Law enforcement will never contact you via telephone to demand payment, nor will we threaten arrest for visiting a police station or Sheriffs office. If you receive a call of this nature, do not provide any personal information. Hang up immediately.
