Today I joined regional leaders at Morgan State University for the 13th Annual Immigration Summit. I was inspired hearing about the work being done by MIMA, our city and county governments and partnering organizations, who continue to advocate and educate our communities through these difficult times. It is important now more than ever that we strengthen our community bonds and support all of our neighbors. Collaboration will be critical to sustaining the momentum, and protecting our immigrant community. ¡Adelante!

Today we will be spotlighting one of our student interns, Jack Motz !

My name is Jack Motz, a recent graduate of Friends School of Baltimore. I will be attending Tufts University this fall to study economics and international relations. At Friends, I was a head of the finance club, where I, along with my fellow club heads, established a student-managed investment portfolio of $10,000. The goal of this fund was to allow club members to learn principles of investing through real-world experience. I was also a co-founder and club head of the Gratitude Club. The focus of our Gratitude Club was to provide a space where students could explore the benefits of expressing gratitude. We piloted a school-wide study to measure the impact of consistent gratitude journaling on self-reported quality of life, and happiness among our community members.

What drew me to work in Councilwoman Ramos’ office was the chance to learn from and understand the importance of local government. Throughout my time in high school, I developed an interest in public policy and how it shapes our world. I see local government as the purest instance of the impact of policy on our country, as it is the closest legislatures to their constituents. The relationship between a local government and its community is the most intimate in all of American politics. I look forward to the rest of my time in her office, and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work here.

I would like to reiterate my strong support for both the Civic Works and Clean Corps program. Both programs do amazing work that sustains our neighborhoods, and assists our residents with building careers within the field of sustainability. It is crucial to support organizations that invest in our residents, care about the well being of Baltimore, and that contribute positively to the health of our neighborhoods.

During tonight’s budget hearing for DHCD I asked several questions pertaining to affordable housing, In-Rem, and landlord licensing. Addressing our vacant housing crisis is one of the critical steps in lowering the amount of vacant buildings in our neighborhoods, and creating affordable housing for our residents. I am looking forward to collaborating with our colleagues at DHCD, and will advocate diligently for the funds needed to ensure that our agencies have the resources to address our vacant housing issues.
