Officer Cooper responded to assist Officer Gibson with safely reuniting Micah, a non-verbal child experiencing an emotional episode. Micah was upset and did not want to leave with his aunt or get into a vehicle. Upon arrival, Officer Cooper provided Micah with Daren the Lion, a comfort item (D.A.R.E Mascot) that helped him feel calmer and more at ease. Officer Cooper is also a grandmother with an autistic grandson

Officer Cooper also provided the department’s First Responder Communication booklet which allowed Micah to communicate more effectively with officers. Using patience, understanding, and communication tools tailored to his needs, Officer Cooper was able to build trust and establish a positive connection with him.

To further help Micah feel comfortable, Officer Cooper playfully deputized him as an honorary police officer. Micah then willingly chose to get into Officer Cooper’s vehicle. With his aunt by his side, Officer Cooper safely transported him home, ensuring a positive and successful outcome.

This incident demonstrates the importance of compassion, patience, and specialized resources when assisting individuals with communication challenges. Through teamwork and a community centered approach, Officers Cooper and Gibson helped turn a difficult situation into a safe and positive experience for Micah and his family. πŸ§©πŸ’™

BTW Micah pinned his own badge 😊
