“If we’re going to restore trust in local government, we have to take the influence of big donors out of the equation and make sure that people with great ideas are the folks who are winning elections in Baltimore, not folks who have access to the most capital... This is the final step to bringing fair elections to Baltimore City: Funding the fund.”

Councilman Kristerfer Burnett introduced legislation Monday night that would require Baltimore City to dedicate $2.5 million to the Fair Election Fund by earmarking energy tax revenue that currently flows into the general fund.

“Given everything that’s happened this past year from “Healthy Holly” on down, these reforms are well-timed. It’s not a handout to politicians but a handout to good government. Say what you will about taxes, if this reduces the influence of deep-pocketed special interests, everybody wins. Outright graft is already illegal, it’s time to put the final nail in the coffin of the legal kind of political influence.”

By using $2.5 million in existing tax revenue annually to match small donors campaign contributions, Baltimore can be protected against the undue influence of deep-pocketed special interests.

Let’s bring Fair Elections home to Baltimore!

We're working to pass Question H and establish a Baltimore Fair Elections program to enable candidates to run for office without relying on large or corporate donors.

Fair Elections programs amplify the voices of Baltimore working families by encouraging small-dollar donations, and providing matching funds for candidates who abide by stricter ethics and transparency rules, like not taking giant checks from lobbyists, corporations, or PACs.

This gets corporate and large donor campaign spending out of our elections and ensures everyone can have a voice in our elections.
