Mylife State Youth Advisory Board

Mylife State Youth Advisory Board SYAB participants are viewed as valued partners in the development of the Maryland Transitional Living Services.

The Maryland State Youth Advisory Board (SYAB) builds on the concept that input from youth is essential to the effectiveness and success of programs designed to serve them. The SYAB serves a major role in program development and is comprised of a group of youth who are encouraged to contribute to the development of program planning. Participation on the SYAB contributes to personal development and

leadership ability. The State Youth Advisory Board will strive to:
• Empower youth to have a positive effect in their communities
• Develop skills necessary for Independent Living and Leadership Development
• Provide an opportunity for youth to network with others
• Develop a Speakers Bureau to represent the SYAB
• Assist in the Planning of the Annual Teen Conference
• Monitor state and federal legislation that may affect foster
youth

On June 18, 2014; the Montgomery County Department of Health & Human Services Child Welfare Division hosted its 37th Annual Foster Family Picnic at the Smokey Glen Farm located on 16407 Riffle Ford Road in Gaithersburg, Maryland. The event hosted foster families, foster youth, family court judges, attorneys, and local politicians from across the county. This interactive event was filled with entertainment, music, dance, and fun activities for all ages. The event exemplified the core values within the Youth Matters Initiative occurring across the state of Maryland where youth and adults come together to enhance their relationship, learn from one another, and feel comfortable with being themselves.
A highlight of the event was the older youth recognition ceremony, 12 youth were honored by the agency’s administration for earning their high school diploma. Each youth was awarded with privately funded scholarships raised through local fund raising efforts and community outreach by agency staff. Youth will use the scholars towards their post-secondary education at public universities and colleges across the state of Maryland. Here are the youth honored during the conference:
