PASSING OF BOARD MEMBER EMERITUS FRANCESCO L. LEGALUPPI
The BIT Center mourns the passing of our esteemed friend and leader, Francesco Luigi Legaluppi (1967–2025), a lifelong advocate for Italian culture and community. As Honorary Consul General of Italy in Baltimore for twenty-five years, founder of Italcultura, and guiding force behind the Italian Cultural Center of Maryland—now The BIT Center—Francesco led with vision and heart until 2021.
We extend our love and comfort to Monica, Chiara, Matteo, and all of his family.
Obituary: Francesco Luigi Legaluppi
14 Novembre 1967 - 10 settembre 2025.
It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Francesco.
He passed away surrounded by his dearest loved ones after a courageous battle with cancer.
He is survived by his beloved wife Monica; his children Chiara, Matteo, and Francesca; his brother Marco and sister-in-law Crystal; his nieces and nephews Gina with her fiancé Kevin, and Andrew with his wife Caitlin; as well as his aunt Liana and his cousins Francesca and Marina.
He is reunited today with his mother, Luciana Romani, and his father, Marcello Legaluppi, who preceded him in eternal life.
Raised between Italy and the United States, he served Italy as the Italian Honorary Consul General in Baltimore for twenty-five years, supporting the Italian community in Maryland before returning to his first passion, the Boy Scouts of America.
Active in politics and various philanthropic organizations, he was the founder of Italcultura from 1985 to 1999, the year in which Italcultura merged with the Circolo Culturale Italiano to create the Italian Cultural Center of Maryland (today The BIT Center) where he was President of the Board from 1999 to 2021.
He leaves an irreplaceable void.
His life will be celebrated in several services in the coming months. Details will be shared as soon as they are available.
In lieu of flowers, to honor his memory, the family has established the Francesco L. Legaluppi Italian Fellowship Endowment Fund at The BIT Center.

On behalf of the Italian American Civic Club of Maryland, we extend our warmest wishes for a happy Columbus Day! This day has been observed since 1892, when President Benjamin Harrison proclaimed it following the tragic lynching of 11 Sicilian immigrants in New Orleans, Louisiana. Unfortunately, many similar events occurred throughout the United States, including in Florida, New York, Arizona, Colorado, Mississippi, Illinois, and Washington State. Our organization takes great pride in our Italian heritage and remains committed to preserving and honoring our cultural legacy for future generations.
