Every day is Labor Day at the Division of Labor and Industry! State wage investigators visit job sites and review payroll on State projects all year long to make sure workers are compensated fairly.

In the last fiscal year, investigators recovered a record $2.7 million in unpaid wages. Over the past three years, that figure is $6.5 million recovered.

Those wages are now in the pockets of Maryland workers — where they always belonged.

All Maryland workers have rights to minimum wage, overtime, pay transparency, and more. If something’s wrong with your pay or benefits, we’re here to help.

Yesterday, Secretary Portia Wu joined Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller, employers, state leaders, and recovery advocates for a roundtable on expanding recovery-friendly workplaces across Maryland.

Following Governor Wes Moore’s recent executive order making Maryland state government a recovery-friendly workplace, the discussion focused on reducing stigma and connecting workers with vital support. Since the Maryland Department of Labor launched the program in 2023, over 120 Maryland employers have been certified.

Labor Day weekend is almost here, but MD Labor is kicking off the celebration early!

It has been a fantastic week honoring workers and advocates who keep Maryland moving. Earlier this week, Sec. Portia Wu joined Governor Wes Moore in Annapolis to recognize local labor leaders, honoring their tireless dedication to Maryland's workforce.

The momentum continued yesterday, as Sec. Wu spoke at the Machinists Union Labor Day rally.

A strong, supported workforce is the backbone of our state's economy. As we head into the holiday weekend, thanks to union partners who are working to build a bright future for all Marylanders.
