🚯 Armed with gloves, trash bags, and no small amount of enthusiasm for a chilly spring morning, more than 70 volunteers with Friends of Raystown Lake took to the shores of Raystown in May for the annual Lake Cleanup Day, hauling out tires, plastic drums, bottles, a gym mat, and even a lawnmower blade from the lake and shoreline.

💪 Volunteers loaded onto boats and fanned out along the 118 miles of shoreline, targeting debris left by visitors or washed in during flooding events. By midday, they had collected roughly one ton of trash:

Early in May, Raystown Lake natural resource specialist Shannon talked about the annual cleanup day, where volunteers helped collect and properly dispose of waste that accumulates at the lake and along the shoreline from floodwaters or from public disposal. 🚮 Thanks to our volunteers for their help hauling tires, plastic drums, and general waste — over a ton of trash in all!

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, including over two dozen individuals from the Baltimore District, is continuing its work with local and federal partners to respond to Super Typhoon Sinlaku, which made landfall April 14-18, 2026, unleashing flash flooding and delivering a devastating direct hit to the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands.

Missions range from Emergency Temporary Power, Temporary Roofing (STRONG Roof Program), Debris Management, and Critical Public Facilities assessments.

On May 28, USACE and the U.S. Army 249th Engineer Battalion (Prime Power) delivered temporary grid power on Tinian to ensure the island’s residents and critical facilities receive electricity while permanent power can be restored.

Our Washington Aqueduct division stands fully ready and prepared to meet the operational demands of our region during these drought conditions.

Managing our shared water resources is a collective responsibility. For more info on the role of the public during a drought, visit the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments link below.

🚨 💧 Drought Watch: COG declared a Drought Watch today for the region due to unusually dry conditions. Residents can help by taking simple, voluntary steps to reduce water use and help protect our water resources.

“Because we haven’t had that situation yet does not mean that it’s not possible.”

In his House testimony on May 19, Baltimore District Commander Col. Francis Pera spoke to the capability of our Washington Aqueduct teams to provide clean, safe drinking water to over a million citizens every day — while addressing the importance of exploring a secondary water source beyond the Potomac River.

Every action we take is focused on upholding our mission, and our studies and implementation efforts toward this end support increased water resiliency measures for the future.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will design and construct upgrades to the waterfront infrastructure at the U.S. Coast Guard Yard in Curtis Bay, MD, to prepare the Yard for a new generation of U.S. Coast Guard cutters. ⚓ This week, our North Atlantic Division Commander Col. Jesse Curry visited the site with Baltimore District and Yard leadership.

🏰 The project's Phase I solicitation is officially out for interested firms as the project gets underway to modernize the waterfront so the Yard can berth, maintain, repair, and dry-dock the newest USCG cutters, including the depths required of the Offshore Patrol Cutter and National Security Cutter that are anticipated to arrive at the Yard beginning in 2030.

USACE manages more than 400 lake and river projects nationwide and welcomes millions of visitors each year. 🚣 While those visits create opportunities for recreation and family memories, preventable tragedies still occur on public waters annually, many involving people not wearing life jackets.

⚠️ “The recreation areas operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are provided for visitors to get outside, enjoy nature and create wonderful memories,” said Maj. Gen. Jason E. Kelly, USACE deputy commanding general for civil and emergency operations. “If your plans this summer include activities on the water, take appropriate precautions. Wear a life jacket, swim in designated areas, recreate responsibly and encourage your family and friends to do the same.”

Baltimore District Commander Col. Francis Pera this week testified before the House of Representatives on the federal response to the Potomac Interceptor collapse.

Within 24 hours of the DC Emergency Declaration, USACE was on the ground. In less than a week, our engineers designed and built a 12-point stormwater diversion system, keeping DC Water crews safe to continue emergency repairs and stopping further pollution from reaching the Potomac.

Critically, our Washington Aqueduct’s regional drinking water supply remained safe and unaffected throughout.
