As LBS expands our work more directly into the formal electoral space, we will engage candidates for public office around the state of Maryland that are left of the Democratic Party establishment in conversations about the importance of revolutionary approaches to politics. These are not formal endorsements, but recognition that these are people whose politics are closer to revolutionary than their counterparts in the political landscape.

In this episode of In Search of Black Power Lawrence Grandpre, LBS Political Commentator, is joined by Dr. Rasheem, director of upcoming film Beyond the Wire. They discuss how The Wire is celebrated for its gritty realism however, it perpetuates an over-sensationalized, externally oriented, and ultimately limited view of Black life in Baltimore. It aestheticizes poverty and violence without sufficiently acknowledging the cultural, historical, and community-based dimensions of African American resilience and self-determination. By re-centering the narrative around Black subjectivity and agency, rather than dysfunction and surveillance this episode of ISoBP not only critiques The Wire's limitations but also points toward richer, more humane forms of storytelling.

In this Substack article, Dayvon Love argues that the absence of any serious coverage of Senator Dayla Attar’s federal indictment is evidence of the selective way Sinclair Broadcasting characterizes corruption and crime to advance its right wing political agenda. He examines how white women are often treated as inherently innocent, how Black elected officials are subjected to different standards of scrutiny, and why the race for Maryland’s 41st legislative district represents a broader struggle between forces committed to maintaining the status quo and those advocating for criminal justice reform, community control of public resources, and Black Liberation.
