Finishing up the Defenders Day celebration honoring the War of 1812, Docent Jan finally was able to visit The Star Spangled Banner Flag House in Baltimore City, located next to Little Italy. They had a wonderful music program and she enjoyed a house tour for the home of Mary Pickersgill, who sewed the large flag for Ft. McHenry. This flag was the inspiration for our National Anthem.
Located at the museum is the drum used by Henry Lightner, who is known as "The Drummer Boy of Ft. McHenry". Henry used this drum during the War of 1812. It had been handed down by his father who used it during the Revolutionary War as well.
Henry is Docent Jan's 2nd cousin 6x removed related to Dr. James G. Lightner, her 3x great grandfather who fought in the War of 1812.
Later this week, she will be visiting a meeting of the Mary Pickersgill chapter of the Daughters of the War of 1812 which her friend Linda just joined. The meeting will be held at Todd's Inheritance in North Point. Docent Jan is a member of a Washington DC chapter.
