For years, Baltimore has done the hard work of closing the digital divide, getting devices, broadband, and connection into neighborhoods that were redlined out of investment for generations. That work matters, and is not finished.
But while we have been closing the gap, a new one has opened right behind it. Last week, I joined the Baltimore City Office of Information Technology at The Factory in West Baltimore for the Digital Equity Ecosystem Forum, where leaders across sectors came together to begin building a Baltimore AI Equity Framework.
AI is already reshaping healthcare, housing, and how people find work. It is not neutral, and it learns from a world with all its inequities intact. If we close the digital divide but let an AI divide open behind it, we will have solved yesterday’s problem while missing tomorrow’s. That is the work I want Baltimore out in front of.
