We often see situations like this in the media however, this one hit very close to home. Please keep in your thoughts and prayers first responders everywhere and especially the members of the Schenectady Firefighters IAFF Local 28 that were injured this morning.
Early this morning , members of Engine 2 from the Woodlawn Neighborhood responded to what was dispatched as a routine outdoor fire in Central Park — the type of call our firefighters answer nearly every day throughout the city.
What should have been a routine response quickly turned violent.
While carrying out their sworn duty to protect the residents of Schenectady, members of Engine 2 were assaulted without provocation. Two firefighters were injured simply for showing up to serve their community.
This incident is a stark reminder of the dangers the men and women of the Schenectady Fire Department face every time the apparatus leaves the station. Our firefighters willingly put themselves in harm’s way to protect this city, and no one responding to an emergency call should have to fear being attacked for doing their job.
We extend our sincere gratitude to the Schenectady Police Department for their swift and effective response in bringing this dangerous situation under control.
Please keep our injured members in your thoughts as they recover, and thank you to everyone who has already reached out with support and well wishes. The strength of this community means everything to our members and their families.
