The State of Kansas is required by law to fund 92% of special education excess costs. It currently funds significantly less.

In Baldwin USD 348, that funding gap exceeded $678,000 in 2025-2026 alone. Because schools must still provide these services, local taxpayers make up the difference through local property taxes. Additionally, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) also requires schools to provide special education services to qualifying students.

If the State fully funded special education as required by law, Baldwin USD 348 could reduce pressure on local taxes, lower mills, invest in staff, and keep more local dollars in our community.

Planning a family vacation or scheduling appointments? 📅✈️

Use our Vacation Planner as a helpful guide when planning time away from school. This resource highlights school breaks, holidays, and other days when students are already out of class, making it easier to minimize missed instructional time.

Every day in the classroom matters, and consistent attendance helps students stay connected, engaged, and on track for success. Thank you for partnering with us to make attendance a priority!

As we prepare for another great school year, our administrative and academic leaders have been hard at work! Over the past few days, they came together to review the 2025-2026 school year, celebrate our successes, reflect on opportunities for growth, and collaborate on plans for the year ahead.

We're excited about what's to come and look forward to welcoming our students, staff, and families back for another successful year!

TUESDAY IS BEF NEWS DAY!

For this year’s 2026 Douglas County Back2School Supply Drive, BEF is proud to be in partnership with United Way of Kaw Valley, ECKAN, Lawrence Schools Foundation, Eudora Public Schools & Foundation, and the Salvation Army.

Beginning July 1st, Baldwin collection bin sites will include Arrowhead Hardware, the Chamber Office, USD 348 District Office, the Community Center, BC Library, and Baldwin First UMC. Dropping off a notebook, a backpack, a package of pencils—anything can help make a difference!

This collaboration gathers and organizes resources for the 2026-27 school year with the aim of all Douglas County children having the necessary tools so that they may succeed on the first day of school and beyond! Thank you to all for contributing to this great cause!
