Tax Mediation and Resolution Office scam

I had an individual contact me today referencing a call from a person claiming to be with the above office, showing a local number; wanting to help with their taxes because it showed they were behind in their taxes.
This is a scam. Be cautious before giving anyone any personal information over the phone or internet. Never purchase anything like a gift card or go to a third party to obtain a form of payment to pay a debt that a person calling or internet said needed to be done to settle a claim.

'Today, a gentleman contacted our office and stated he had received a call from an individual stating he was with the sheriff's office, and we had a warrant on him. He identified himself as an officer, and he started doing small talk about the upcoming election. In the end, the man got our citizen to go to Wal-Mart and instuct the Walmart associate at customer service, that he needed to make a payment of $1000 on his one pay account .
A law enforcement agency will not call you and say we have a warrant and request you to go to Wal-Mart . Our business is handled through the court system.
The sad part is once you give an individual your information, they have it; it is very unlikely you ever get it back. Next time, call us first. Get our opinion on whether it is legal or a scam.'

We have a outstanding felony warrant for this individual for child abduction. He is currently in custody in Buncombe County.

The SBI is assisting the Mitchell County Sheriff's Office and the Asheville Police Department with a series of crimes.

Christopher Bethea has been arrested by the Asheville Police Department and charged with statutory s*x offense with a child under 15 and statutory r**e of a child under 15. He is currently being held in the Buncombe County Detention Center.

The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are expected to be filed.

A person from Mitchell County fell for this scam today while he was in Florida. Please remember that law enforcement will never ask for payment of anything over the phone. Don’t let someone rush you into compliance. Call any law enforcement agency and seek their advice on the legality of the phone call. This scam goes on nationwide; we are all well aware of almost all the scams.

Monitor your children’s social media accounts

Last night, yet again within a 3-month period, another child from Mitchell County went missing. Thanks to the hard investigative work of the Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office, the North Carolina Bureau of Investigation, and the Asheville Police Department, the child will be returning home. The child’s phone led officers in the direction of Asheville to locate both the child and the perpetrator. This is still a very active investigation. Mitchell County officers have secured a felony warrant for the individual.

01/09/2026 Mitchell County Deputies arrested “Devin James Douglass” and “Nikkole Marie Grover” on multiple charges in relation to the multiple larcenies from Mitchell County Safe Place Thrift Store. After further investigation and multiple tips sent into the Mitchell County Sheirffs Office page it was determined that these subjects gave deputies false identification. Mitchell County Detectives as well as help from Spruce Pine Police Department were able to once again locate the subjects and taken them into custody.

Brandon Lee Kerley was charged with the following:
- Felony Possession Methamphetamine
- Misdemeanor Drug Paraphernalia
- Second Degree Trespassing
- Misdemeanor Larceny
- Identity Theft
- Resisting Public Officer

Sarah Burnett Swann was charged with the following:
- Felony Possession Methamphetamine
- Misdemeanor Drug Paraphernalia
- Identity Theft
- Resisting Public Officer

Both Kerley and Swann had multiple outstanding warrants from other counties and were served pn those as well.
