The Open Door Network

The Open Door Network The Open Door Network is an agency where we help those who enter our doors reimagine their lives.

Food & Shelter – The Open Door Network, formally the Bakersfield Homeless Center and Alliance Against Family Violence and Sexual Assault provides critical emergency food and shelter to homeless families with children, single women and a small percentage of single men. New View Family Program – Through extensive case management we addresses the root causes of homelessness to help families achieve s

table, independent community living. Individual case plans specifically address barriers to healthy family dynamics, employment and housing. These services are also provided to single adult women and men residing at our homeless services campus. Client Services – Client Services staff provide laundry, hygiene kits, clothing distribution, mail service, furniture for housing placements, lockers, and donation management. Counseling – A Family Counselor works with individuals and families to address behaviors contributing to homelessness and improve family dynamics. Case Management – Case managers work with clients to develop individual case plans that address each individuals’ specific factors that contribute to homelessness. Discovery Depot, Licensed Child Care – We offer the only licensed childcare center in the state of California located on-site at a homeless shelter, funded by First 5 Kern and staffed and operated through a sub-contract with California State University, Bakersfield. Job Skills Program – In-House Volunteer Program is designed to help homeless clients learn valuable job skills as they assist in the day-to-day operations of the Center. Job Development and Placement Program - Job Development and Placement Program provides training for “living wage” jobs, along with the education and skill development and job placement services to help homeless people gain employment and long-term stability. Housing Assistance Program - The Housing Access Unit assists in housing search and placement, negotiations with tenants and landlords, and tenant education in addition to the household goods needed to re-establish and maintain a household. Homeless Prevention Services –We provide emergency housing and utilities payments through EF&SP and DHS funding to prevent loss of habitable housing. Aftercare Program - These services are designed to help prevent recurring homelessness through supportive activities such as home visits, counseling, and economic support in the form of supplemental food and household supplies and childcare.

A pathway forward. 💙

Every day, The Open Door Network’s Workforce Development crews are putting in the work cleaning streets and alleys throughout our community while building skills, gaining experience, and creating new opportunities for their futures.

The work may be visible in cleaner neighborhoods, but the impact goes much deeper. It’s about the dignity of work, the confidence that comes from contributing to your community, and the opportunity to take another step toward stability and independence.

We’re proud of our crews and the work they do every day to make Bakersfield stronger.

Last week we were honored to welcome Valley Strong Credit Union to our Workforce Development office for a special Basic Access event!

Participants received financial education, hands-on support opening safe and affordable bank accounts, and an incredible opportunity to take the next step toward financial stability. Valley Strong went above and beyond for participants who opened an account during the event!

We’re so grateful for community partners like Valley Strong who help us turn opportunity into action and open doors to brighter futures.

Thank you, Valley Strong, for investing in our community!

Santa and Mrs. Claus made a summer stop at Beale Memorial Library, and brought more than holiday magic. 🎅🤶☀️

While children enjoyed storytime and photos, The Open Door Network connected with families to share information about our services, resources, and upcoming holiday events.

Awareness begins with a conversation. Connection begins with showing up.

Missed today’s visit? Join Santa and Mrs. Claus tomorrow at Southwest Library at 3:30 p.m. 🎄✨
