Our History

Formed in 1866, the Kern County Sheriff's Office is the oldest law enforcement agency in the county. In addition to providing police services to the unincorporated portions of the county, the Sheriff has the responsibility for the jail system, providing bailiff and prisoner transportation service to the courts, search and rescue, coroner services, and civil process (serving lawsuit pa

pers). The Sheriff's Office has 1,202 sworn and civilian employees. There are 567 authorized deputy sheriff positions deployed in patrol, substations, detectives, courts services, and special investigations units. There are 338 detention deputy positions deployed in the detention facilities, and 297 Sheriff's professional support staff assigned throughout Kern County. The Sheriff, who also serves as the Coroner, is an elected official. All other ranks are county employees and fall under civil service regulations. Our Mission

🏆🐾 A FIRST-PLACE FINISH FOR K-9 RAVEN!

Kern County Sheriff’s Office Detentions K-9 Raven recently competed in the Tracy Police K-9 Association K-9 Trial and came out on top!

Raven took 1st Place in the Narcotics Building Search, showcasing the skill, focus, and training that make our K-9 teams such an important part of keeping our facilities and communities safe.

The Kern County Sheriff's Office is asking the public's assistance in locating any information involving the occupants of a dark gray or black four-door sedan that was involved in a double homicide. On 05/25/26, homicide detectives responded to the 5000 block of Eucalyptus Drive for a shooting where two male subjects were located deceased. During the investigation, detectives learned a dark gray or black four-door sedan fled the scene of the crime following the shooting. Taft Deputies- 3 arrests

On September 4, 2026, deputies from the Taft Substation with the assistance of the Kern County Sheriff’s Office High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Task Force(KC-HIDTA) and Wardens from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife executed a search warrant in the 500 block of Klipstein Street in Maricopa and executed a search warrant in the 400 block of E Street in Taft.

There was a total of 959 ma*****na plants, 52 pounds of processed ma*****na, and a loaded 9mm semi-automatic handgun located at the Maricopa address.

Jose Hernandez Ramirez (27) from Mexico and Victor de la Cruz Garcia (27) from Mexico were arrested for possession of a fi***rm while maintaining a place for sales, maintaining a place for sales, possession of ma*****na for sales, and ma*****na cultivation. There were two fi***rms located at the Taft address. Alberto Guitron (58) was arrested for possession of a fi***rm by a prohibited person and maintaining a residence for sales. Ramirez, Garcia, and Guitron were subsequently booked into the Kern County Sheriff's Office, Lerdo Justice Facility.

The Taft address is a result of a lengthy ma*****na cultivation operation where several search warrants were executed and a total of 2,112 indoor ma*****na plants, 873 outdoor ma*****na plants, 641.5 pounds of processed ma*****na, and two loaded fi***rms were seized as a result of this investigation.

Thank you to Donnie and his daughter, Abby, for joining the search efforts and locating the missing juvenile in the hot Mojave Desert. Their quick actions, compassion, and willingness to help provided her with much needed water and shade until we arrived. We are grateful for our supportive community in Kern, specifically our tight knit outlying communities like Mojave.
