The Kern County Sheriff’s Office Cadet Unit is a program designed to provide young men and women between the ages of 15 and 21 years with an insight into the world of law enforcement. The Cadet program is established through the Public Safety Cadets and is a Volunteer Program.

The intent of the Cadet unit is to mentor young adults to serve their communities by providing knowledge, skills and practical experiences through education and training delivered by public safety professionals that build character, physical fitness, and respect for the rule of law. The Cadet Unit is guided by several mentors who are members of the Sheriff's Office. The mentors share their abilities and experiences with the Cadets to produce a high-quality young adult of whom the Sheriff's Office and the community can be proud.

Members of the Cadet Unit are afforded the opportunity to observe firsthand the efforts of Sheriff's Office personnel. Members will have the opportunity to participate in many departmental functions, such as patrol, communications, and detentions. They also participate in community functions including the Kern County Fair, child identification, and food drives to name a few. The Cadets volunteer several hundred hours a month to the Sheriff's Office. Members of the Cadet Unit wear a modified uniform to distinguish them from deputies; Cadets are not allowed to carry weapons. Cadets also wear an additional shoulder patch that identifies them as a Cadet.

Cadet Unit 519 had a great training session with members of Bakersfield Search and Rescue last night! During the training Cadets learned about SAR's roles and responsibilities, equipment, vehicles, and even practiced tossing throw bags in a simulated river rescue! We topped it off with a visit and demonstration from SAR K-9s Guinness and Maverick. Special thanks to SAR Lt. Sullivan and Corporal Pruitt for volunteering your time to teach our unit about Search and Rescue.

Today, cadets Martinez, Hernandez & De La Cerda graduated Phase One of the San Diego Explorer Academy & we could not be more proud of their hard work! During this week-long live-in academy, they were away from home, without their phones & subject to intense & constant learning. They did a phenomenal job! Congratulations, Cadets!

Thank you, Mentor Chief Deputy Levig, for making the trip to SD to show your unwavering support for our unit! Thank you, Detentions Senior Deputy Frank, for not only being an academy medic but also being there every day to guide our kids. And a very special thanks to Senior Franks' wife, Angela, for volunteering to be a chaperone & Mamma Bear for the entire week!
