Precipitation in Bakersfield averages 5-6 inches per year. It’s a very dry climate. That means water for families, business, farms, the environment and recreation, has to come from elsewhere. Besides rain and snow, there are several water sources in Kern County, all of which are limited, valuable and important to Kern County’s economy and lifestyle.

What are Golden Mussels?

The Bureau of Reclamation takes the threat posed by golden mussels seriously and they explain Golden Mussels as the following:

Invasive aquatic species like golden mussels are posing new and significant risks to California's water supply systems, hydropower facilities, ecosystems, and conveyance infrastructure.

Golden mussels (Limnoperna fortunei) are small freshwater bivalves native to Southeast Asia. They reproduce rapidly and form dense colonies that attach to hard surfaces such as rocks, pipes, and watercraft

Key concerns include biofouling of infrastructure, threat to power generation and water delivery, difficulty of control/eradication, and ecological disruption. Reclamation is currently engaged in proactive surveillance, monitoring, and coordination activities with our operating and recreation managing partners to slow the spread and reduce risks to our water and power infrastructure, native ecosystems, and communities that we serve.

Water is important in all aspects of our lives, and the kitchen is no exception! One pound of pasta can use up to 6 gallons to cook, especially if water is used to rinse the pasta afterward or wash pots and pans.

The largest water user in your household is most likely your landscape. Lush green grass might be the standard, but it isn’t the water friendliest. Consider adding California native plants to your yard and save gallons of water daily!

Ahead of the Memorial Weekend, coalition of local Kern County water interests announced the launch of a coordinated public awareness campaign – calling on boaters and the public to remember The Golden Rule: Clean. Drain. Dry. The campaign will focus on engaging recreational users of Kern County waterways to help prevent the spread of golden mussels and protect our water.

o Cleaning vessels and gear inside and out right after leaving the water.
o Draining bilge, ballast, wells, and buckets before you leave the area.
o Drying equipment completely before launching into another body of water.
