Great Basin National Park An ethereal landscape of ancient trees, deep culture, underground caverns, and vast night skies
(227)

In the shadow of 13,063-foot Wheeler Peak, 5,000 year old bristlecone pine trees grow on rocky glacial moraines. Come to Great Basin National Park to experience the solitude of the desert, the smell of sagebrush after a thunderstorm, the darkest of night skies, and the beauty of Lehman Caves.

It's ! Cave Week is a celebration of all things caves and karst. It celebrates the importance, geology, history, biology, current research, exploration, and restoration of these fascinating underground worlds. All week, we'll be posting about the many caves here at Great Basin National Park. To kick off our celebration, we invite you to explore Lehman Caves on our virtual cave tour!

This three-part virtual tour was created by using LiDAR (three-dimensional laser imaging) and photogrammetry (high resolution pictures of the cave) and can be accessed by following the link on our website:

Alright everyone, it's Memorial Day weekend! We have a host of things to share that will help you plan your trip to Great Basin.

First things first: ranger-led tours of Lehman Caves begin tomorrow, May 22. Tickets are available by reservation and first-come, first-served at the Lehman Caves Visitor Center. We strongly encourage advance reservations, as walk-up tickets go quickly once doors open—we often have a line forming well before the visitor center opens! Book tickets at https://www.recreation.gov/ticket/facility/251853. Remember: check in for reserved tours at least 15 minutes before your tour’s start time, with a hard cut-off 5 minutes before. If you arrive after that point, you will not be able to go on the tour.

Next, Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive is fully open! While that does mean the Bristlecone Trailhead is open, we urge caution when hiking in the higher elevations of the park. Trails may still have snow and ice, so come prepared for wintry conditions if planning to hike to the bristlecone pines and glacier.

As a general rule for a holiday weekend, expect that visitor centers and trailheads will be busy, and know that parking is limited. Come early if you know there’s a trail you want to do, or if you have a cave tour to catch, and be flexible. If one parking lot is full, rest assured there are more trails to see. You can stop in a visitor center to pick up a trail guide or check our website for ideas: https://www.nps.gov/grba/planyourvisit/hiking-information.htm

And of course, we want everyone to have a good time, so please explore with your safety in mind. Elevation in the park ranges from 5,300 feet at the Great Basin Visitor Center to 13,065 feet at the summit of Wheeler Peak. If you are coming from lower-elevation areas, gaining elevation quickly can take a toll on the body. Bring water and snacks, wear layers, and if you begin to feel dizzy, nauseated, develop a headache, or have difficulty breathing, turn around and come back down. If moving to a lower elevation doesn't make you feel better, dial 911. No view is worth putting your life at risk.

We look forward to seeing you this summer! Safe travels and have a wonderful weekend!

🏔 TO THE SUMMIT 🏔

Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive reopened to Summit Trailhead this morning - the primary access point for 13,065-foot Wheeler Peak, the highest independent peak in Nevada.

If you plan to hike in the park's alpine reaches, please be prepared for snowy and icy conditions that can prevail well into early summer on ridgelines and summits - as seen here atop Wheeler Peak last week.

Don’t miss your opportunity to celebrate Cave and Karst Week with us at Great Basin National Park. Journey underground from the comfort of your own home during this virtual event hosted by Great Basin National Park Foundation.

Dive underground with us to explore how Great Basin National Park's subterranean wonders have shaped—and been shaped by—science, stewardship, and community engagement over four decades. Gretchen Baker, Great Basin National Park’s ecologist and cave specialist will share the diversity of caves found within Great Basin National Park and what research reveals about these subterranean systems.

Louise Hose will discuss what makes Great Basin’s caves distinct from others and how geologists have come to understand the geologic timeline of their formation.

Jeanne Howerton was Lehman Caves first ever girl guide, at a time when park rangers weren’t allowed to be female. She courageously followed her passion to explore and share the underground world she was completely captivated by and will have some great stories to tell.

❄❄❄ SNOMG ❄❄❄

A late snowstorm blanketed Great Basin National Park yesterday - so much so that a cool snow ranger appeared on the steps of Lehman Caves Visitor Center last night! 😎

Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive has reopened to Osceola Ditch Trailhead, and both park visitor centers are open today from 8am-4pm.

If you plan to hike, please be prepared for unseasonably wintry conditions, including snow, slush, and mud - particularly at higher elevations. Reaching the Wheeler Peak Bristlecone Grove under these conditions will require a 10-mile round-trip hike with an elevation gain of nearly 3,000 feet - a trip best attempted only by the prepared and experienced hiker.

Please enjoy Great Basin's late winter wonderland - safely!

Need space? That's our specialty. Great Basin is one of over 40 National Park Service sites certified as an International Dark Sky Place. Parks such as these offer an increasingly rare opportunity to experience the cosmos.

International Dark Sky Week is a global event in April that celebrates the benefits of natural darkness, including stellar views and habitat for wildlife. The National Park Service protects and restores nocturnal landscapes as part of the natural resources and values protected under the NPS Organic Act.

The night sky is a reflection of our oldest shared heritage and newest field of vision. It encompasses both extremes of deep understanding and state-of-the-art discovery. Turn off the lights and visit a certified International Dark Sky Park to connect and create memories under the glittering expanse.

Astronomy programs at Great Basin take place throughout the summer, starting May 22. 💫
