Around 4A.M. on May 1, 2026, law enforcement responded to a medical call on Court St. in Baker City. The call quickly turned into a criminal investigation. Law enforcement determined that a suspect had fired shots inside a family member’s home. Surveillance footage was obtained from neighbors which led law enforcement to the suspect’s home on Campbell St. The Northeast Oregon Regional SWAT team was called and an arrest was made around 10A.M. The suspect is currently in the Baker County Jail on a number of felony and misdemeanor charges. Thankfully no one was seriously injured.
I’d like to thank law enforcement in Baker County and Union County who swiftly responded to help out this morning.
The suspect’s arraignment will occur on Monday afternoon. If anyone has any further information about this investigation, then please contact Detective Andrew Martin and Detective Mason Powell at the Baker City Police Department.

Law enforcement is currently in the area of Campbell St and 14th St. for a barricaded subject. Please avoid the area between 17th St and 10th St near Campbell until further notice.

May 1st marks the time of year again when Baker City High School Students will engage in the sport of “Water Tag” using what the Baker City Police Department expects will be a variety of Sq**rt Guns and other water devices. During this time, you may see local kids using Sq**rt Guns to tag a friend while recording the event on video to prove their successful catch, known as Senior Assassin.

This event is not school-sanctioned, but is well known to the high school kids and is being tracked by the Splashin App.

The Baker City Police Department asks those participating in this event to:
• Avoid using realistic water guns, to prevent public alarm
• Respect private property rights and do not trespass
• Do not engage non-players
• Do not shoot at or from moving vehicles
• Stay Safe

🚨WARNING🚨
We have received complaints regarding two separate scam calls/text messages.

1. Multnomah County traffic division sending a final court ordered mandatory collection notice. (see attached picture)

2. A call from Oregon Trail Electric Co-op requesting payment claiming to be collections from OTEC. This particular caller spoofed OTEC's real office phone number. A phone number spoofing is when a scam caller falsifies the information to your caller ID display to disguise their identity and making the call appear to come from a local or trusted number.

To keep yourself protected from these incidents, please try to:
1. Let it go to voicemail
2. Do not click on any links
3. Verify independently
4. Report calls and texts as spam

Baker City Police Investigate Gang-Related Graffiti; One Juvenile Arrested

Baker City, Oregon — On the evening of March 18, 2026, Baker City Police officers responded to reports of vandalism involving graffiti in the alley between 1st Street and 2nd Street, as well as in the Highway 7 underpass at Orchard Street.

The graffiti, identified as gang-related “tagging,” referenced the 18th Street Gang. Officers, working in coordination with detectives, immediately initiated a comprehensive investigation. As a result, one juvenile suspect has been identified and taken into custody in connection with the incident. The juvenile was transported to the Canyon County Juvenile Detention Center in Idaho and lodged on a charge of Criminal Mischief in the First Degree, a Class C felony. The estimated cost to remove the graffiti exceeds $1,000.

This investigation remains active and ongoing. Additional arrests are anticipated.

The Baker City Police Department, in collaboration with regional law enforcement partners, takes all gang-related criminal activity seriously. Preventing the establishment of organized criminal groups within our community remains a top priority.
