Red Flag Warnings in Baker City
With wildfire threats increasing and a busy fire season expected, the Baker City Fire Department and our partner agencies will help notify the community when fire danger is especially high. This summer, when a Red Flag Warning is issued for Baker City and the surrounding Wildland Urban Interface (WUI), a red flag will be displayed beneath the U.S. flag as a visible reminder to use extra caution.
What Is a Red Flag Warning?
A Red Flag Warning is issued by the National Weather Service, in coordination with land management agencies, when critical fire weather conditions are occurring or expected soon. These conditions may include low humidity, warm temperatures, dry fuels, and strong winds that can combine to create extreme fire behavior.
Red Flag Warnings are typically issued when dangerous conditions are expected within the next 12 to 24 hours. A Fire Weather Watch, by comparison, means that Red Flag conditions may develop in the next 12 to 72 hours.
What You Can Do During a Red Flag Warning
During a Red Flag Warning,
small sparks can quickly become dangerous fires. Please take the following precautions to help protect your home, neighborhood, and community:
Avoid outdoor burning, including campfires, trash burning, and yard debris burning.
Use grills or smokers only on non-flammable surfaces, such as gravel, pavement, or concrete.
Never leave fires unattended, and fully extinguish charcoal, embers, and open flames before leaving the area.
Clear dry vegetation around your home and maintain defensible space.
Move flammable items, including propane tanks, away from buildings and other structures.
Park vehicles on paved or gravel surfaces to reduce the risk of sparks from hot parts or dragging chains.
