ELECTRICAL FIRE CAUSES EVACUATION IN DOWNTOWN BAKER CITY

BAKER CITY -- The following is an update to a fire reported earlier this morning that occurred last night at the Geiser Grand Hotel on Main Street in Baker City. See the following press release from the Baker City Fire Department:

(Release from Baker City Fire and Rescue)

At approximately 10:45 pm last night, the Baker City Fire Department was dispatched to a Commercial Fire Alarm in the 1900 block of Main Street. Engine 2431 responded.

Upon arrival, crews found smoke conditions in the basement extending into the first floor. Additional manpower was requested, with brought Engine 2432, Ladder 2451, and Chief 2401.

The facility was evacuated with assistance from the Baker City Police Department. The tenants were relocated to a warmer facility for the rest of the night.

Chief 2401 requested assistance from Baker Rural Fire Department. Engine2533 and Chief 2501 responded. Keating Chief 2201 also responded.

The cause of the smoke was a clothes dryer that was on fire. 2431 quickly extinguished the fire and started ventilation procedures. Additional crews were needed to assist with ventilation.

The cause of the fire was found to be electrical in nature. Fire damage was estimated at approximately $500 and was contained to the clothes dryer. The fire alarm was reset when the smoke was cleared.

There were no injuries. A total of 17 firefighters worked just under 2 hours to be able to turn the scene back over to the business owners.

Thank You to Baker City Police Department, Baker Rural Fire Department, Keating Fire Department, and Oregon Department of Transportation (for redirecting traffic around the incident) for all your assistance.
