Congratulations to Sergeant Edwin Harvey for receiving the DCSO Deputy Sheriff of the Year Award! Sergeant Harvey came to our office almost 7 years ago after his retirement from the Navy. He was easily able to show his competence and swiftly became a shift sergeant. The main point of agreement from everyone here is that Sgt. Harvey is tremendously dependable. If he’s in charge of a task, it’s guaranteed to be done and done well. You couldn’t ask for a better deputy to have your back on scene or to respond to your call for help, and that is why we are proud to have Sergeant Edwin Harvey in our ranks. There is no question that he deserves this award, so bravo to Sgt. Harvey!

Last Friday our office hosted the Big Red Bus for donations during National Police Week. We are thankful for all those that came to donate and pleased that there were 12 units of blood collected that day. For context, the average human has 10 to 12 units (pints) in their whole body! So there was a whole person's worth there, and if that blood can help even one other person, then it is worth the time and effort. Considering a simple surgery can take up to 3 units and more extensive surgeries, 10 or more, we hope everyone will consider donating the next time the bus rolls around.

Our office recently swore in our newest deputy, Lee Grant, and we feel he will be an excellent addition to our patrol department. So we welcome Deputy Grant and his readiness to serve Decatur County.

We have another long term jailer to celebrate! Norman Cotton has been a staple of the Decatur County Jail for 20 whole years. Cotton is the most upbeat person you could meet and has a calm and cheerful presence no matter the day. While he quite often has a humorous side, he is equally just as reliable, steady, and responsible in all that he does for the jail. There's is never a worry if something will get done when he's on the task, and he's never complained about pitching in to help others as well. Our office is lucky to have Norman Cotton, and we are thankful for him.

Saturday's Mental Health Awareness Fair was held to showcase mental health service providers in Decatur County as well as bring into focus the importance of mental health. The mind is just as important as the body, and we were glad to support the efforts of all involved.
