Welcome Edge Effect to Something New IX!

Now on view at Bainbridge Island City Hall, Edge Effect is a stunning illuminated sculpture that transforms from day to night.

Inspired by the ecological “edge effect”, where two or more ecosystems overlap to create greater biodiversity, the artwork features hand-cut images of sword fern, Nootka rose, elderberry, Pacific trailing blackberry, and salmonberry, with the wing tips of an owl framing the phases of the moon. As daylight fades, high-lumen lights bring these intricate forms to life, casting ever-changing patterns of shadow and light.

We especially encourage you to visit after sunset, when Edge Effect truly shines.

What happens when a familiar symbol is set free from the page?

Discover Theme and Variation #2 by Lloyd Whannell, now on view as part of Something New IX, located on Winslow Way outside Town & Country Market.

Inspired by the elegant curves of the treble clef, this sculpture is part of an ongoing series that explores the many ways a single musical form can be reimagined in three dimensions. Graceful, playful, and ever-changing, the work invites you to walk around it, see it from every angle, and discover something new with each perspective.

Pause for a moment, take a closer look, and let this familiar symbol strike a different note.

Blakely Elementary’s 2nd grade class has created a special installation at City Hall titled Rain Is Recharge! Led by their art teacher, Ms. Bonano, this thoughtful piece beautifully blends science and art, capturing how nature sustains and inspires us.

The Public Art Committee (PAC) and Arts & Humanities Bainbridge are excited to announce the ‘Something New VIII’ People’s Choice Award Ballot. Every year, the People’s Choice Award gives our community a chance to decide which sculpture speaks to them the most. The Something New program provides both a dynamic public art experience and an ongoing opportunity for artists from around the Pacific Northwest to exhibit their work. New pieces are selected and rotated into five permanent locations annually, bringing “something new” to Bainbridge Island each year. A grand prize of $1,500 will be awarded to the winning artist! Voting ends April 1, 2026. Vote via the 🔗 in bio!
