Watershed Conservation Authority The Watershed Conservation Authority (WCA) serves communities in our region through the conservation and preservation of open space and natural resources

WCA serves communities in our region, which includes the San Gabriel River and Lower LA River watersheds, through the conservation and preservation of open space, and through the improvement of access to parks and trails. By working with nature in our plans and projects we seek to enhance local water resources, native plant habitats, wildlife, and to advance the overall quality of life in both our natural and urban communities.

Fire Ecology walk at Mount Baldy Wilderness Preserve. Rachel Wing of California Botanic Garden led us on a walk through WCA's Mount Baldy Wilderness Preserve to learn about the fire strategies of native plants and how local ecology impacts and is impacted by fire. On the way, Francisco showed us a precipice where the crew worked to clear broom. Scroll to the last pictures to remember what was like before the multi year broom removal project began. Thanks to California Botanic Garden San Gabriel Valley Conservation Corps - Youthbuild for your work and dedication to our land Rivers & Mountains Conservancy

Pleased to update WCA project page map to reflect recent land acquisitions in the Azusa foothills, as well as a lot line adjustment which allows protection in perpetuity of an unbroken connection from Walnut Creek to upland oak woodlands at Walnut Creek Habitat and Open Space, and expansion of WCA to include the Dominguez Channel watershed and Santa Catalina Island.

Today Outward Bound Adventures began a multi-year effort to reduce the seedbank of invasive species in the floodplain of the San Gabriel River at Azusa Wilderness Park. As the crew breaked for lunch, a family of deer returned to check out the activity happening at their home. How do we know it was their home? David Orozco pointed out the trail they made, and the shallow hollows the deer dug into soft alluvial soils to sleep in at night! Thank you to our friends Bernard Yin and Rebecca Ramirez for talking about their volunteer work for Watershed Conservation Authority and raising awareness of how rising temperatures affect our local aquatic species in the Yale Climate Connections blog and podcast

Intensifying droughts and hotter stream temperatures are putting new pressures on the state’s cold-water fish.

Watershed Conservation Authority and Rivers & Mountains Conservancy staff meeting at Los Cerritos Wetlands with Tidal Influence, LLC. Spending time among the creatures of the marsh including flying fish, egrets who wiggle their toes to attract fish, and plants that secrete salt crystals from their leaves! Thank you, Megan, for guiding us through this world!

"For us as anglers and outdoor enthusiasts, it feels as if everything is coming together – being able to combine our passions with a purpose outside of ourselves. The adaptations of native Southern California trout and steelhead inspire us to no end. These special fish are the toughest when facing heat, drought, and unpredictable cycles in climate. Admittedly, there’s also a certain kick to making discoveries and observations so close to a massive and dense metropolitan area." A nice article on Bernard Yin and Rebecca Yin of CalTrout, who have been collecting water temperature data in the upper tributaries of the San Gabriel River to inform future management actions.
