In the Spotlight – Stay Safe on 4th of July
Put safety first when celebrating this 4th of July. In 2025, an estimated 13,004 people
were treated in emergency rooms for fireworks related injuries.
The best way to safely enjoy this 4th of July is to watch a public fireworks display
conducted by professionals. However, if fireworks are legal where you live and you
decide to use them, be sure to follow these important safety tips:
• A responsible adult should supervise all fireworks activities when children are
present
• Always purchase fireworks from reliable sources and follow label directions
carefully
• Never point or throw fireworks at another person
• Use fireworks outside only and away from buildings and vehicles
• Never carry fireworks in your pocket
• Only light one firework at a time
• Keep a bucket of water nearby to fully extinguish those that don’t go off or in case of
fire
When using sparklers, note these special safety tips:
• Always remain standing while using sparklers
• Never hold a child in your arms while using sparklers
• Never hold, or light, more than one sparkler at a time
• Never throw sparklers
• Sparkler wires and sticks remain hot long after the flame has gone out, so be sure
to drop spent sparklers in a bucket of water.
• Don’t allow children to wave sparklers around or run while holding them.
Celebrate our nation's heritage on this 4th of July, but celebrate it safely. Have a safe
