A small team monitors a critical nesting habitat for loggerhead sea turtles

We've raised almost 15% of our $40,000 goal for the Sea Turtle Program in Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge.

We're expecting 2000 nests to be laid in the refuge this summer and volunteers will spend over 6,000 hours locating nests, carefully excavating the eggs, taking DNA samples, moving the nests to a newly dug hole above the king tide line and caging them to protect from predators. When they hatch, they check each nest to make sure that every hatchling makes it out. This goes on from May to October.

The $40,000 we need covers the seasonal salaries of 2 wildlife technicians-- critical leadership positions for this program to thrive.

Help us reach our goal through our philanthropic arm, the Coastal Expeditions Foundation. 100% will go directly to pay Turtle Team salaries.

We’ve seen lots of interesting things on the beach, but this may be a first for us.

While visiting with Huntington Beach State Park rangers today, one of our staff captured this shot of a beaver on the shoreline.

Park ranger Mike Walker said the animal likely made its way there to evade a predator (like an alligator) in a nearby freshwater pond and would safely make its way home on its own – as long as beachgoers do not approach it or block its path. Mike has seen this once before in his time at Huntington.

If you happen to see out-of-place wildlife, always give it space and allow it to return to its natural environment -- and let wildlife stay wild. If you’re ever unsure or see a wildlife violating occurring, call our 24/7 wildlife hotline at 1-800-922-5431.

Did you see the full Worm Moon Sunday evening? March's full Moon is called Worm Moon as it was thought to refer to earthworms that appear with the warm soil in spring, inviting robins and other birds to feed on the worms. You can read about full Moon names from The Old Farmer's Almanac - see almanac.com. Jen Cahill took this photo at Garris Landing pier. Thanks Jen
