💙 Keeping Kids & Our Community Safe 💙

With more e-bikes, scooters, and other motorized devices out and about in Sartell, a major concern we’re seeing is making sure everyone—especially our kids—stays safe.

One of the biggest issues our officers see is kids riding electric scooters without helmets. By law all kids under the age of 18 on an electric scooter must have a helmet on. A simple helmet can make a life-saving difference in a crash.

Each type of device comes with different rules for speed, age, helmets, and where you can ride. Taking the time to understand these differences can prevent accidents and protect the people who matter most.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Parents—please talk with your kids about:
• Wearing a helmet every ride
• Following traffic laws
• Riding in the same direction as traffic
• Staying visible, especially at night

🚦 Riders of all ages:
• Yield at intersections
• Use lights and reflectors after dark
• Stay alert and avoid distractions

A little awareness goes a long way in keeping our streets and trails safe for everyone.
Let’s look out for one another, Sartell.

Pedestrian Safety Tips:

DRIVERS:
- Stop for people crossing the road
- Slow down for people; slower speeds save lives
- Before passing stopped vehicles, check for people crossing the road
- Never pass or drive around a vehicle that is stopped for pedestrians
- Look in all directions before turning
- Watch for people walking, day or night
- Look carefully behind your vehicle before backing up, especially for small children
- Watch for people in wheelchairs and motorized carts, who may be below eye level
- Be alert and expect to see people walking everywhere
- Avoid distracted and aggressive driving
- Put away the cell phones, food, and make-up

AND WALKERS:
* Cross in well-lit areas when possible.
* Be alert and look for vehicles before crossing the road
* Stand clear of parked cars and obstacles before crossing
* Look and continue to look for vehicles in all lanes of traffic when crossing the road
*Always walk on the sidewalk; if there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic
*If intoxicated, don't walk without assistance; a ride home may be a safer option

Today, we honor our fallen law enforcement partners. Please take a moment to remember and honor all those who have sacrificed before us. In memory of many, and in honor of all.

A scam reported to us involves a business being called on the business phone line from an undisclosed number. The caller was stating they were investigating that business for fraud by another employee. The caller told the employee not to tell anyone, take money out of the till, and go get a gift card. The employee did all of this.

While at the store getting a gift card, the employee was on the phone with the caller. The employee was then told by the caller to provide the account number and PIN to the caller, which was done. An interesting part?? The caller told the employee to put the card and the receipt in the safe!

The employee was under 18, and we were told the scammer was "very convincing"! And the business is now out over $400 to the scammer. The moral of this scam is that it happens to all ages, and not just through personal phone numbers, emails, or texts. Please share with everyone to help avoid others being scammed as well!

Each May, our nation comes together to honor the sacrifice and dedication of law enforcement officers all over the United States. Originally established by presidential proclamation in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy, National Police Week includes Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15th and a week of observances recognizing officers who have given their lives in the line of duty, as well as those who continue to serve and protect our communities with dedication and courage.

National Police Week is both a time of remembrance and a commemoration of all those who serve with courage, integrity, and bravery each and every day.

This week reminds us that behind every badge is a story of service, sacrifice, and family. Blessed are the Peacemakers.

How to Show Support:

Turn on a Blue Light: Light up your home or office in blue to honor law enforcement.

Wear Blue: Wear blue, especially on May 15, to show support.

Social Media: Use to share messages of gratitude.

As the temperatures rise in Minnesota, leading into those hot summer days, this is a reminder to all drivers with children in the vehicle:

Before you leave the car, before you get out and shut that door...... STOP LOOK AND LOOK AGAIN BEFORE YOU LOCK YOUR CAR!

Also, lock your car when you aren’t using it. Even if you don’t have a child of your own, a child in your neighborhood could get into your unlocked vehicle.

If you see a child alone in a locked car, act immediately and call 911. A child in distress due to heat should be removed from the vehicle as quickly as possible and rapidly cooled. A child's body temperature will rise 3 to 5 times faster than an adult's, according to NHTSA.

STOP. LOOK. LOCK.

Spring is here, which means weather is changing fast from day to day. That’s why it’s important to never leave kids behind in a car as the weather warms up, even for a few minutes. Before you leave the car, always: Stop. Look. Lock.
