**REMINDER** Avon Lake Historical Society and the City of Avon Lake invite the public to celebrate the unveiling and dedication of ALFD #1, the City’s first fire truck, on Saturday, May 23 at 1:00 p.m. at the Avon Lake Fire Department (ALFD) located at 32811 Walker Road.

This event will be held indoors at the fire station, RAIN or SHINE 🌧️☀️

Speakers will include:

• Mayor Mark Spaetzel
• Assistant Fire Chief Steve Peter
• Dave Dlugosz and Chuck Fye, ALHS restoration team leaders

This event is open to the public. A food truck will be on site and beverages will be made available courtesy of ALPD.

The meticulously restored 1938 Dodge American LaFrance will be introduced to the public during a special dedication ceremony before making its debut in the City’s upcoming Memorial Day Parade. Following the dedication ceremony, residents will have the opportunity to “ring the bell,” take photos, and get a closer look at a piece of Avon Lake history. Hydrant season is here!

We have started flushing in zone 8 of the city. This area is highlighted in blue. If you live in this area you may notice some discoloration in your water. Simply run your water until clear to avoid any issues with laundry, etc. If you notice the discolored water in your laundry, simply stop your washer and contact Avon Lake Regional Water for assistance. Contact the Fire Department for any questions. We will keep you updated as we change zones. Red Zones have not been completed.

EMS Paramedic Training from last month hosted by the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Our members took advantage of the Advanced Airway Lab that consisted of 5 stations: Pediatric airway scenario (burn), Basic airway adjunct and intubation with video laryngoscope, Pig lung compliance and bougie aided cric, SALAD technique (Suction-Assisted Laryngoscopy and Airway Decontamination).

Alongside our Lorain County mutual aid partners, our members spent three days sharpening critical firefighter survival and rescue techniques. We practiced window bailouts, rescuing firefighters who fell through a floor into a basement, and safely extricating firefighters up staircases and through windows—just a few of the high-risk, life-saving skills we trained on.
A huge thank you to the generous residents who have donated—and continue to donate—properties for us to use. These real-world training opportunities are invaluable. They help us get familiar with buildings throughout our city and master the skills that could one day save a life.

The reality of 24 hour shifts… Platoon 3 had 16 calls during yesterday’s shift. 6 of those calls being after 11pm.

After our members spent ~8 hours participating in intensive hands-on firefighter training. This is why we NEED to prioritize REST and RECOVERY!

A few days late, but Happy New Year everyone!!! Avon Lake Firefighters responded to a record 3574 calls in 2025. We are honored to serve our community, and wish everyone a safe and healthy 2026!
