As we celebrate National Firefighters Day (May 4), National Nurses Week (May 6–12), and National EMS Week (May 17–23), we want to take a moment to recognize the incredible members of Avoca Fire & Rescue who answer the call—day or night, in all conditions, without hesitation.

Our firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, and nurses wear many hats in service to our community. Whether responding to emergencies, providing lifesaving care, supporting patients through difficult moments, educating the public, or serving behind the scenes to keep operations running—your dedication does not go unnoticed.

This team represents compassion, courage, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to the people of Avoca and the surrounding communities. Thank you for the sacrifices you make, the time away from your families, the training you put in, and the heart you bring to every call.

To every member of Avoca Fire & Rescue: we see you, we appreciate you, and we are proud of all you do!!

Please join us in thanking these amazing individuals who make our community safer every single day. ❤️🚒🚑👩‍⚕️👨‍🚒

The Avoca Fire & Rescue Department would like to sincerely thank our amazing community for the overwhelming support shown throughout this past weekend. Seeing so many people come together to celebrate this milestone meant more to us than words can truly express.
This fire station became a reality because of the dedication, support, and countless hours put in by fire department members, City Council members past and present, and City staff. We are incredibly grateful to each and every person who played a role in making this happen.
We would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the many businesses and individuals who helped make the weekend such a success. Thank you to Hy-Vee for donating the hot dog and hamburger buns, OSI Group in Oakland for donating the hotdogs, and the Avoca Fire & Rescue Association for providing the rest of the meal and drinks. Thank you as well to Stars and Bars for the bounce house and to Wayne Brosam for bringing the bomb robot for the community to enjoy. While LifeNet Helicopter was unfortunately unable to attend due to emergencies in the region, we truly appreciate their continued partnership and support.
We would also like to recognize and thank our generous neighbors for allowing us to use their properties for parking, Jim Irlbeck at Avoca Building Material Center and Mike Jones at Pauley Jones Funeral Home.
A special thank you goes to Aidan Flathers for putting on a great performance, as well as Dirty Pig BBQ and Hungry Spartan Pizza for keeping everyone well fed. Thank you also to The Exchange and Fred’s Tavern for helping keep everyone hydrated throughout the evening, and an extended thank you to Fred’s Tavern for allowing members of the fire department to bartend for an hour and collect tips as a donation to the department.
Most importantly, we want to recognize Cydney Shriver, our Community Relations Coordinator, who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to help make the entire weekend a success. Your hard work, dedication, and countless hours did not go unnoticed. Thank you.
We are proud to be part of such a supportive community and honored to serve the City of Avoca and the surrounding area with a department that is dedicated, passionate, and committed to helping others.

🔥 Fire Hydrant Clearance: What Every Resident Should Know
Keeping fire hydrants accessible saves precious seconds during an emergency. To help firefighters do their job quickly and safely, hydrants must remain clear of obstructions year‑round.

Required Clearance
Maintain at least 3 feet of clear space around the entire hydrant.

Do not park within 15 feet of a hydrant (Iowa law).

Keep hydrants free of snow, vegetation, decorations, fences, and yard items.

Why It Matters
Clear access allows firefighters to:

Quickly connect hoses

Fully open hydrant valves

Avoid delays during structure fires, medical calls, or rescue operations

Even a few extra seconds can make a major difference in protecting lives and property.

How You Can Help
Trim bushes and landscaping around hydrants

Remove snow after storms

Remind visitors and contractors not to park near hydrants

Report damaged or blocked hydrants to your local fire department

A little effort from each household helps keep our entire community safer.

We’re excited to share that we’ve been awarded a $5,000 grant from the Schildberg Foundation to help purchase a skid unit for our grass truck. This support strengthens our ability to respond quickly and effectively during grass and field fires. We are incredibly grateful for the Foundation’s investment in our community safety.

Avoca Fire & Rescue offers the community to show their national pride with a subscription to our You're A Grand Old Flag Program. For just $50 a year, they'll place a beautiful American flag in your front yard on six national holidays:
• Memorial Day
• Flag Day
• Independence Day
• Labor Day
• Patriot Day
• Veterans Day

How it Works
• A 3’x5’ nylon American flag on a 10’ pole will be placed in your yard.
• Flags are set out at dawn and retrieved at dusk.
• On three-day holiday weekends, flags may remain up all weekend.
• A small, flush-mounted ground receptacle will be installed near your curb — safe for mowing and out of the way year-round.

Learn more or register for the program for the 2026 year at cityofavoca.com/o/coa/page/avoca-old-flag-program
