On April 18th at the Crooked Lake House the Averill Park - Sand Lake Fire Department proudly celebrated our Annual Installation Dinner—an evening dedicated to recognizing the commitment, leadership, and service of our incredible members.

We honored the officers who will lead us in the coming year and took time to reflect on the dedication it takes to serve our community day in and day out. From emergency calls to training nights and everything in between, this department runs on teamwork, sacrifice, and pride.

Congratulations to all of our newly installed officers and a heartfelt thank you to those officers from the last year who are stepping back from a leadership role.

Here’s to another year of service, strength, and brotherhood/sisterhood.

🚒 Training in Action at APFD 🚒

This week our members took part in a hands-on day drill focused on vehicle rescue scenarios. Crews used our new RES-Q-Struts to lift and stabilize a vehicle on its side, simulating the extrication of a patient with an entrapped limb underneath.

This equipment allows us to safely lift and secure vehicles at the same time, giving our firefighters greater control and efficiency during real emergencies. Drills like this help ensure we are prepared to respond when our community needs us most.

This equipment was made possible through funds raised by our fundraiser activities, including our breakfast sandwich fundraisers and summertime raffle. Your support directly helps us invest in training and tools that improve safety and response capabilities.

Thank you for continuing to support APFD and our mission!

This week, we recognize National Public Safety Telecommunications Week and the incredible individuals behind the headset who keep our communities safe every single day.

Rensselaer County Public Safety dispatchers are the calm voices on the other end of the line during someone’s worst moments. They are the steady presence in chaos, the first first-responders, and the vital link between those in need and the help on the way. Their professionalism, dedication, and compassion do not go unnoticed.

We also want to extend a special thank you to our own members, Dispatcher 22, who currently serves at the county, as well as Dispatcher 37 and Dispatcher 15 who have served in the past. Your commitment to helping others, both on the radio and on the scene, reflects the very best of our department.

Your voices make a difference. Your work saves lives. And your service matters more than words can express.

Thank you for all that you do.

This morning, members of the Averill Park Fire Department took time out of their day to complete pump operator refresher training.

Members drafted out of Glass Lake and moved water through 400 feet of 5-inch large diameter hose to a receiving engine, simulating water flow at the scene of an emergency. This gave newer pump operators valuable hands-on time at the pump to build confidence and sharpen their skills.

Training like this helps ensure our members stay ready when the community needs us most.

If you are interested in joining our team, reach out to us or stop by the firehouse any Tuesday night at 7 PM.
