Today is a very special day, especially here at our firehouse.

If you've ever been around the fire service, you know that the firehouse becomes a second home with a second family—hence the name firehouse. As it becomes that second home and family, every firefighter usually finds a senior firefighter who becomes a mentor and father figure throughout their journey in the fire service.

If you've ever spent time around our firehouse, you know that many of our firefighters are fathers in their own homes, but they also become second fathers at the station to the younger generation of firefighters. They are the ones who teach, guide, encourage, and are always willing to share their knowledge and experience.

Today, we want to honor all of our fathers, including our soon-to-be fathers. Thank you for being leaders, mentors, protectors, and the ones who always seem to have the answers or know how to fix anything. We are truly grateful for everything you do, not only for your own families but for your firehouse family as well.

Happy Father's Day to all fathers, especially the ones of the Avera Fire Department. Thank you for everything you do. We are truly grateful for each and every one of you. 🚒❤️

🚨 OUTDATED: We are currently in a break in the weather—a calm before the storm, if you will.

We are continuing to monitor this system closely as it approaches our area. At this time, it is producing severe thunderstorms as it moves across the state. Counties to our west are beginning to be placed under Tornado Watches and Severe Thunderstorm Watches.

This system is moving slowly from west to east, which is increasing the potential for heavy rainfall and localized flash flooding. Based on the latest information, the greatest impacts to our area are expected between 10:00 PM Thursday and 8:00 AM Friday.

We will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as needed until the threat has passed. Please remember that this page is not monitored 24/7. For the latest weather information, continue to follow your local news outlets and the National Weather Service office in Peachtree City. In the event of an emergency, call 911.

Please stay weather aware throughout the night. Keep your phone charged, have multiple ways to receive weather alerts, and be prepared to take action if warnings are issued.

Don't be scared—be prepared. Have a safe night from the AFD.

Help us give a warm welcome to the newest member of the Avera Fire Department, Jason Williams!

Jason is joining our department as a support firefighter while he works toward earning his Georgia State Firefighter Certification. As one of our younger members, he brings enthusiasm and a fresh perspective as we continue to grow and train the next generation of firefighters.

Although Jason has no previous firefighting experience or certifications, he is starting from the ground up with a strong work ethic, a willingness to learn, and an eagerness to get involved in training. We are excited to help him develop the knowledge and skills needed to serve our community.

Please join us in welcoming Jason to the Avera Fire Department. We're excited to have you on the team, Jason! 🚒

🚨 OUTDATED: We are beginning to monitor a tropical system developing in the Gulf that could bring weather impacts to our area later this week.

At this time, our primary concerns are heavy rainfall and the potential for severe weather. Current forecasts indicate the greatest impacts are most likely to occur Thursday through Friday.

Potential hazards associated with this system include:
• Heavy rainfall
• Thunderstorms
• Damaging wind gusts
• Localized flash flooding

It is still too early to determine the exact timing, track, and severity of this system. We encourage everyone to stay weather aware and continue monitoring forecasts throughout the week.

For the latest updates, follow your local news outlets and the National Weather Service. Our area receives forecasts, watches, warnings, and weather updates from the National Weather Service office in Peachtree City, and they will continue to provide the most up-to-date information as this system develops.

Additional information on tropical systems can be found through the National Hurricane Center at National Hurricane Center (https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ ).

We will continue to monitor this system and provide updates as more information becomes available.

On Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at 2:31 p.m., the Avera, Stapleton, Wrens, and Jefferson Fire Departments were dispatched to the area of Sand Valley Road and Highway 540 in reference to a semi-truck and trailer fire.

Upon arrival, crews discovered a semi-truck and trailer parked on the shoulder of the westbound lane, with both the truck and trailer fully involved in fire.

We would like to thank the Wrens and Stapleton Fire Departments, along with Avera Tanker 3, for providing water supply to the two pumping engines. We also thank the Wrens Fire Department for assisting Engine 3 with fire suppression by pumping a third attack line.

Additionally, we would like to thank the Jefferson Fire Department for providing additional man power during fire attack.

The fire was safely and effectively extinguished with no injuries reported. The driver was located safely and was uninjured.

Once again, we would like to thank all assisting agencies for their support: the Wrens Fire Department, Stapleton Fire Department, Jefferson Fire Department, Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, Georgia State Patrol, Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), and Jefferson County 911.
