As the chronic crisis of inflation, foreign debt, and competition for scarce jobs tightens in the Philippines, the corrupt Marcos-Duterte-aligned political class continues to push for neoliberal reforms. Over the past two weeks, over 40,000 jeepney drivers went on strike to protest the mandatory corporatization of their industry, and the Philippine House of Representatives began deliberations on plans to amend the 1987 Constitution. These events both point to trends plaguing the development of the Philippines’ economy, which has increasingly relied on the concentration of capital and low-wage labor to form corporate monopolies, giving workers less power while simultaneously eroding democratic protections within national institutions.

In Texas, we have also seen the destruction of public institutions and the development of corporate monopolies happen in tandem throughout history on the backs of exploited workers and minorities, especially immigrants. Malaya Movement Texas supports the creation of a mass movement in the USA and in the Philippines to give power to the people, out of the hands of corporate monopolists and political dynasties. We call for the strengthening of democracy in the Philippines by opposing the neoliberal efforts to implement the jeepney phaseout program and Cha-Cha.

Malaya Movement USA statement on the transport strike

The Malaya Movement USA stands in full solidarity with the striking jeepney drivers in the Philippines. We echo their demands of junking the Government’s so-called “jeepney modernization” program. State-sanctioned violence continues to harm and kill our Black & Brown allies. Despite the peoples’ clamoring for police abolition and defunding, city police budgets continue to grow -- as does their power to brutalize civilians. in Atlanta is yet another example of the State’s priorities, choosing profiteering and policing over people. This is paralleled by recent news that the United States is eyeing expanded military base access in the Philippines via the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement ( ).

This expansion - engineered in recent visits between US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Vice President Kamala Harris, and dictator’s son Ferdinand Marcos Jr. - would further equip the Philippine state to ramp up terror tagging and violence against unionists, landless farmers, journalists, student activists, and environmental defenders. This directly correlates with the local scaling up of police budgets in Memphis, Atlanta, and our cities in Texas.

U.S. imperialism is both economically and militarily rooted in white supremacy. As the U.S. military terrorizes Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities in the Global South, the U.S. police complement their actions domestically. Solidarity between our communities is vital to our survival.

Swipe to the last slide to see several ways to support Black-led organizing by National Alliance Against Racist & Political Repression ― Dallas, In Defense of Black Lives Dallas, Jailhouse Justice in Houston, Austin Justice Coalition, and others against militarism and police violence across Texas.

The Israeli-American Council Summit which took place over the last three days in Austin, is a gross display and legitimization of the genocidal attacks of Zionist forces against Palestinians in their homeland.

We continue to stand in solidarity with our Palestinian siblings against these fascist and imperial regimes that affect the livelihood of Palestinians and Filipinos at home and in the diaspora. Let us continue to build and assert our interconnected anti-imperialist struggles here in Texas.

📣✊🏾 Justice for Percy Lapid! Defend Press Freedom! Malaya Movement USA Statement on the Murder of Journalist Percy Lapid

Malaya Movement USA condemns in the strongest terms the political killing of Percy Mabasa, popularly known as Percy Lapid, the radio host of Lapid Fire on DWBL 1242. We send our deepest condolences and solidarity to his family and friends.

Lapid was a staunch critic of the Duterte and Marcos Jr. regimes. He fearlessly dispelled fake news and took on hard-hitting commentaries on Duterte’s drug war, government graft and corruption, extrajudicial killings, red-tagging, and the historical revision of martial law atrocities perpetuated by the Marcos political dynasty.

His radio show became a beacon of truth and resistance in a time of political repression and widespread disinformation in the Philippines. In his final show just 9 hours before he was gunned down, Lapid condemned Lorraine Badoy’s red-tagging of Manila Judge Marlo Magdoza-Malagar.

Lapid’s murder by masked vigilantes on a motorcycle bears the mark of state sponsored, politically motivated assassination. This has been a mainstay in extrajudicial killings in the last few years under the Duterte regime. Lapid is the 26th journalist murdered in the Philippines since 2016, solidifying the country as the most dangerous in Southeast Asia for journalists.

The culture of impunity continues and is perpetuated under Marcos Jr’s presidency with Lapid being the second journalist killed within his first 100 days. On September 18, 2022, radio broadcaster Renato “Rey” Blanco was stabbed to death in Mabinay, Negros Oriental. These killings exemplify the unrelenting attacks on progressive individuals and organizations, similar to the dark days of Martial Law under Marcos Sr. and the looming reality for journalists and critics under the Marcos Jr. regime.

Malaya Movement USA calls for an immediate and independent investigation into the ambush! Stop the killings! Defend press freedom! Justice for Percy Lapid!

Repost from

THIS WEEK, son of a deposed dictator and Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. visited New York City at the invitation of U.S. President Joe Biden himself. His itinerary included the UN General Assembly, the New York Stock Exchange, and a private meeting with Joe Biden (something the U.S. president was so ashamed of, he kept it off his public calendar). All week, Marcos made clear his intent to continue undemocratic and violent repression of dissent; defense of the interests of big landlords and overseas corporations / “investors”; labor export policies; welcoming ever increasing foreign plunder of Philippine labor, land, and natural resources. HOWEVER, at virtually every stop Marcos made across New Jersey and New York, the Filipino-American community mobilized in force to express their anger and their will to resist fascism, struggle for genuine democracy, and achieve true sovereignty for their people.

AND RIGHT HERE IN TEXAS, the U.S. state with the 3rd-largest Filipino population, the movement for a genuinely liberated Philippines is alive and well - made evident by both a downtown Dallas highway banner drop with this week, and by our cultivation of community in Texas over the past few years.
