As the chronic crisis of inflation, foreign debt, and competition for scarce jobs tightens in the Philippines, the corrupt Marcos-Duterte-aligned political class continues to push for neoliberal reforms. Over the past two weeks, over 40,000 jeepney drivers went on strike to protest the mandatory corporatization of their industry, and the Philippine House of Representatives began deliberations on plans to amend the 1987 Constitution. These events both point to trends plaguing the development of the Philippines’ economy, which has increasingly relied on the concentration of capital and low-wage labor to form corporate monopolies, giving workers less power while simultaneously eroding democratic protections within national institutions.
In Texas, we have also seen the destruction of public institutions and the development of corporate monopolies happen in tandem throughout history on the backs of exploited workers and minorities, especially immigrants. Malaya Movement Texas supports the creation of a mass movement in the USA and in the Philippines to give power to the people, out of the hands of corporate monopolists and political dynasties. We call for the strengthening of democracy in the Philippines by opposing the neoliberal efforts to implement the jeepney phaseout program and Cha-Cha.
