Truckers make America run. Without truckers, nothing we use in everyday life would function or be convenient. Everything we take for granted in America is maintained on the back of truckers and their hard work.

At the Port of Houston, and across America, truckers are being misclassified as "independent contractors", both by large companies who actually own all the trucks, as well as by the local operating authority.

In reality, they should be paid for all hours worked, with benefits and days off just like any other blue collar worker in this country.

By being classified as "owner operators", these large greedy companies can get away with giving hard-working truckers crumbs while they keep all the profits for themselves.

ACP has been going to ports across the country for months now, including in Houston, to organize truckers and help them get organized labor power so they finally claim a voice at the table. One way to do this is for truckers to have a co-op they own and run themselves, giving them leverage to negotiate how much they get paid.

For this reason, truckers across the country are signing up to build the Intermodal Draymen Association (IDA).

If you are a trucker, consider starting a committee in your port, getting organized, joining a union, or signing up for the IDA to own your own work.

In small-town Texas, clean water isn’t a guarantee...it’s a luxury. For the 3,500 residents of Sweeny, brown, smelly tap water is daily life. Aging infrastructure and natural contaminants have left the water undrinkable. Families spend hundreds on bottled water just to cook, bathe, and brush their teeth.

While local officials call it an “aesthetic” issue and state funding is rejected or out of reach, working people in Sweeny are left behind. The city government has failed to act, but the people haven’t forgotten. They deserve dignity and safe water.

Last month, STX members of ACP Texas drove to Sweeny to deliver free water, listen to residents, and conduct a social investigation. We spoke directly with the community, including one resident who shared her story anonymously about the toll this crisis takes on health, trust, and hope.

This is only the beginning of our work in Sweeny. We’re building connections and understanding the need on the ground so we can return alongside the working-class people of Sweeny to fight for a real solution.

Clean water is a right, not a privilege. ACP stands with the working class people of Sweeny.

Serving our communities is a long-term commitment.

Last weekend, we got the call from our community contact in Sandy Creek. Our last project, helping build new raised beds for a neighbor devastated by this summer’s flooding, needed more hands to bring to life. We suited up & hit the road, working all morning to get these new planters operational so our Sandy Creek neighbor could get their small business restarted. We helped fill in the planters we made at the beginning of the month with layers of rock, dirt, and mulch, cut & installed liners, and moved the new planters into place.

Now, our neighbor is ready to get their small business & life closer to normal.

Meeting the needs of the working class in our communities is a protracted effort. But ACP TX is always up for the task.

ACP TX sticks with our communities and sees the job through.

This weekend in Sandy Creek, Leander, we helped a local community organizer and her husband construct seven raised beds for a friend of theirs whose seasoning business had been literally washed away during the devastating 4th of July flooding in Central Texas.

With so many families needing all the help they can get as they go through the heartbreaking process of clearing out and even demolishing their own homes, many have had to put their own businesses & revenue streams on hold, including the women you see in the video.

Rebuilding had been put on the back burner for the foreseeable future, but our friend Amanda had an idea that she needed our help with. While her friend was attending the funeral of a mother and her two children who had perished in the flood, we worked with Amanda to surprise the community member by constructing and assembling new beds right where they used to be.

With the new beds, she and her husband can finally reopen their seasoning business. The joy on her face warmed our hearts and reminded us of what it means to serve the people.

When the state hangs you out to dry, the American Communist Party will have your back.

On Sunday, ACP TX redeployed to Leander to continue our efforts supporting various forms of civilian disaster relief, including search & rescue operations, warehouse organizing, debris-clearing, and home restoration.

SAR & debris-clearing was cut short on Sunday due to another round of heavy storms and flooding risks. While out in the field, ACP TX had to execute on an emergency retreat back to civilian HQ along with other civilian & firefighter volunteers after warning signs of flooding upriver. This well-organized deployment & retreat was again managed by a team of civilian volunteers, organized with contingency plans, removal vehicles, and emergency communications. We remain completely impressed with the level of disciplined organization already present among the working people of Central Texas.

We also returned to one civilian’s home, whom we assisted Saturday with massive debris removal, to start work on home renovations. We removed flood-damaged floorboards and helped clean the floors in preparation for professional contractor work.

Once again, we ask: Where is the emergency response from city, state, and federal officials? Why is it still average working Texans stepping up to rebuild Leander?

We’re not here to beg for our institutions to “do their job”. We know they won’t. That’s why we’ll be here, deep with the real working people of Leander, helping to build a new status quo for people’s power. When disaster strikes, the masses stand up. ACP will be there side by side with working people asserting their interests.

American Communists are hard at work in Leander, Texas assisting civilian search & rescue, disaster relief, and recovery efforts.

The community there has managed to put together a completely grassroots civilian response to the disaster, mobilizing operations to step in where the government has failed.

The Communists helped by donating crucial supplies, aid, and labor in the clearing up of debris and other forms of damage that blocked access points necessary to facilitate the civilian operations: Clearing downed trees, scrapped metal and hazardous materials from people’s homes to restore safety and normalcy to the community.

Our so-called government is not going to help us. We the people must be the ones to step up and aid one and another in times of crisis.

It does raise the question: As hard working Americans, why is the government we pay grueling taxes to not working for us in our moment of need? Imagine if all the taxes we sent to our useless government went to spontaneous civilian operations.

The people themselves are doing the government’s job much more efficiently!

This week, ACP Texas deployed cadre from across the state to support Kerrville’s recovery from catastrophic flooding that killed over 100 Texans across six counties.

In the wake of this neglect from local & state officials, and mass devastation, Central Texas citizens have mobilized in inspiring fashion to support displaced and impacted communities. ACP TX joined in on these efforts to play our part in aiding the working people of Texas.

Working alongside Salvation Army coordinators and Kerrville residents, our team dove into essential warehouse operations - sorting vital donations into medical, hygiene, and food categories while assembling family supply kits. The impact was felt in the collaboration: Texans from all backgrounds working shoulder-to-shoulder to support neighbors in crisis.

At dawn, our cadre executed warehouse operations:

-Categorizing critical donations (hygiene/medical/food)
-Loading pallets for distribution
-Assembling family supply kits

Kerrville is one of dozens of Central Texas communities devastated by these floods. We’re coordinating with regional partners to identify urgent unmet needs in smaller towns along the Guadalupe River basin. Our teams remain on-call throughout July. ACP TX will always be ready to act in service of working families in our state.

Join the effort:
VOLUNTEER: Contact Salvation Army Kerrville at (830) 465-4797 for direct volunteering opportunities in the region & donation direction
DEPLOY: Visit acp.us/join to become a Reserve member and assist in relief efforts
ORGANIZE: Organize supply drives in your own community, and get in touch with Central Texas mutual aid organizations collecting supplies

Texas Trucker had hopes the Trump administration would fix issues in the trucking industry, but the administration is continuing exploitation of working class truckers and small operators.

ACP Texas participated in a discussion with a local Texas truck owner-operator driver on the state of the trucking industry and how the system is exploiting truckers who are the backbone of the economy.
