Happy Father's Day from the League of Women Voters of Texas!!!

Today we celebrate the fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers, father figures, and dads of every kind who show up, not just for their families, but for their communities, too.

To the dads who bring their kids to the polls, who explain why voting matters, who march, advocate, and model what civic engagement looks like... thank you!

Join us in commemorating the birthday of Alice Dunbar Nelson. Alice was active in the civil rights and women's suffrage movements. In 1915, she was the field organizer for the Middle Atlantic States in the campaign for women's suffrage. During World War I, Dunbar-Nelson served as a field representative of the Women’s Commission on the Council of National Defense and the Circle of Negro War Relief. She was also an American poet, essayist, short story writer, journalist, and columnist, often considered one of the most significant writers associated with the Harlem Renaissance movement of the 1920s.

in 1865 — now known as Juneteenth — Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas and read General Order No. 3, delivering the news of emancipation to enslaved Black Texans more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. The last to know. The last to be free. Today, we honor that history and recommit ourselves to the ongoing work of ensuring every Texan's voice is heard, counted, and protected.

Happy Juneteenth. 🖤❤️💚

Here are some myths and facts about mail-in voting:

🚫 MYTH: Mail-in voting is riddled with fraud and cannot be trusted.
✅ FACT: Out of every 10 million mail-in ballots, fewer than 4 are fraudulent.

🚫 MYTH: The United States is the only country that uses mail-in voting.
✅ FACT: Over 50 democracies worldwide use mail-in voting, including Germany, the UK, Australia, Canada, and Switzerland.

🚫 MYTH: Anyone can send in a mail-in ballot. There's no way to verify who it's really from.
✅ FACT: Mail-in ballots go through multiple layers of verification: signature matching, unique barcodes, ballot tracking, and in many states, witness or notary requirements.

🚫 MYTH: Mail-in voting is just a convenience for people who don't want to bother showing up.
✅ FACT: Mail-in voting is a lifeline for the elderly, people with disabilities, active-duty military families, and rural voters depend on it to make their voices heard.

🚫 MYTH: Mail-in voting is a new, untested idea.
✅ FACT: Mail-in voting in America dates back to the Civil War. Union soldiers cast mail ballots in the 1864 presidential election, making it a 160+ year tradition in American democracy.

🚫 MYTH: Mail-in voting is designed to benefit one political party.
✅ FACT: Research consistently shows mail-in voting does not significantly advantage either party. What it does do is increase overall voter turnout.

This is our last chance. Congress is fast-tracking a reconciliation bill that would funnel $170 billion+ to DHS, ICE, and CBP, without a single safeguard to protect our communities.

For months, armed, masked agents have been deployed into American cities, surveilling, detaining, and harming civilians. If this bill passes, ICE and CBP will have nearly unlimited funds to continue with no accountability.

We need you to stand up! Contact your representatives TODAY and demand they vote NO on this reconciliation bill!

For one Texas voter, casting a ballot in the March primary took weeks of coordination, multiple phone calls, two applications and help from several people just to meet the deadline.

“As a multi-disabled, homebound senior living in a rural area … there are a number of barriers I have to overcome just to cast my ballot by mail,” he said in a written account to Texas Public Radio.

With two elections coming up in May, advocates say gaps in support services can make voting a time-consuming challenge for many people with disabilities, despite legal protections guaranteeing access.
