"It's My Park Day" volunteers were, Fred Krebs, Leigh Stillson, Kemp Dixon, Rod Rice, Laura Krebs-Holm, Betty Scaggs, Rick Stout, Kendall Krebs, Kate Fleming and Carl Beasley. Please give them a high-five when you see them next time, 'cause they really gave 110% both in time and energy helping to improve The Heritage Oaks Park. We certainly accomplished a lot, got some exercise and had a good time, too. We had lots of food, too...freshly made muffins and chocolate chip cookies and coffee/tea donated by Ventana del Soul on Oltorf. Fresh fruit and granola were donated by Wheatsville Co-Op. We could have, but fortunately didn't, spend all the time eating! We all received a neat IMPD event T-Shirt, too!
The HOP will be recruiting volunteers for Saturday, April 13, for "Clean Sweep" sponsored by Keep Austin Beautiful. Please mark your calendars!
We will be contacting everyone in the neighborhood to either give some hours for this next event or donate a $ or $$ to a kitty for things that PARD does not pay for. More on this later. There are plenty of jobs before, during and after the events, like placing signs, baking cookies, picking up/returning tools, taking photos during the event, and requesting donations for materials from nurseries. Now that I'm no longer a "first-timer" I am more familiar with the details, so many responsibilities for events will be handled by volunteers. We hope for an enthusiastic response.
Here's an email received today from Leilani, of Watershed:
"I have a small surplus of Mountain Laurel saplings that would be great to go in your respective grow zones asap. If your neighborhood group is interested in planting a few, I could bring them to you within the next few days. It would be approximately 25 saplings, approximately 1-2 feet tall. If your neighborhood group isn’t interested in planting, but would like them in the grow zone, I can have my team plant them in the grow zone within the next few days also.
Let me know what you would like to do."
Thanks
Leilani Williams, WPD
I replied that we would be interested and asked if her people would dig some of the holes!!! It's really no big deal though, since the saplings are only 1'-2' tall, guessing the holes don't have to be that large. Leilani also sent the offer to Denise, a leader of another local park, so we would have only a dozen saplings to plant where we would like to have them.
What do you think? Shall we set another day this week to move on this or just ask the WPD crew to go ahead and plant them where they think best?
Also, we have TWO (2) more "Tangerine Beauty" Cross Vines to be planted near the ugly chain link fence. These are fast growers and will be absolutely beautiful all summer long...besides attracting butterflies and hummingbirds.
Leilani also mentioned that Watershed will be sticking several newly trimmed living branches directly into the soil around the pond. This technique has proven to be an easy method of propagating, especially around a water source. They will be keeping tabs on those plantings as we get into the drier months of summer.
That's all, Folks.
Let's get down and dirty ;))
