Working people built Texas, and they keep our state moving every day.

From the Galveston machinists who proudly marched a locomotive they built through the streets in 1910 to today’s nurses, teachers, roofers, line workers, and countless others, Texas workers have always been the backbone of our state.

Better wages. Safer workplaces. Stronger protections. That’s what Texas House Democrats are fighting for.

Happy Labor Day, Texas.

Religious liberty must apply equally to everyone, including Muslim students. Rep. Suleman Lalani and Salman Bhojani are standing up for Muslim students and making clear that religious liberty, equal access, and the free exchange of ideas must apply to everyone.

Acting Comptroller Don Huffines plans to single out four public school districts for review while excluding charter schools, state-controlled districts, and potentially TEA.

We support transparency, but we also support fully funded public schools and accountability that applies equally across the board.

Today is LBJ Day in Texas. A Hill Country Democrat who started out teaching poor students in Cotulla went on to sign the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act, Medicare, and Medicaid into law - lifting millions of Americans out of poverty and enshrining the right to vote.

Sixty years later, that legacy is under attack. Texas House Democrats aren't just celebrating LBJ's work today - we're defending it.

Today, Texas House Democrats called on Governor Abbott to demand that the Trump Administration immediately shut down the Dilley Immigration Processing Center following reports of inedible food, undrinkable water, delayed medical care and horrific conditions endured by children and families.

Dilley must close.

Happy birthday to State Representative Ana Hernandez! Born in Reynosa and raised in Pasadena, Ana has represented House District 143 for more than 20 years. A practicing attorney and fierce advocate for her community, she has fought for strong public schools, affordable health care, voting rights and working families across the Houston area.

As Ann Johnson for Texas House District 134 said, “It’s pretty hard to claim to be pro-life when you can’t even give somebody an opportunity for health care at birth.”

After 30 years of Republican control, 52% of Texas counties have no obstetric clinician, 58.7% have no birthing facility and 78.4% of rural Texas lacks a birthing facility.

At yesterday's data center hearing, State Representative Ana Hernandez asked the question Texas families deserve answered: If we already know these massive transmission costs will eventually be passed on to residential customers, why aren’t we addressing that burden now?

08/19/2026

Senfronia Thompson said it plainly: Texans should not be forced to foot the bill for massive data centers without any choice or say in the matter.

Making working families subsidize corporate development they cannot opt out of is unfair and undemocratic.
