TCOLE Executive Director Greg Stevens joined other local officials to welcome in Jason Hester as the newest chief for the Bellaire Police Department yesterday.

Hester spent nearly three decades with the Texas Department of Public Safety and recently wrapped up his time as a commissioner for TCOLE after serving for the last 12 years. We thank him for his dedicated service to the law enforcement profession and wish him all the best in this next chapter.

The Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) course, designed and built on the Avoid, Deny, Defend (ADD) Strategy developed by ALERRT in 2004, provides guidance and a proven plan for surviving an active shooter event.

Earlier this week, Sgt. Chris Smyth with our Enforcement Division taught a CRASE class and instructed attendees on how to recognize and respond to an active threat and the decision-making process in such an event. Neighboring businesses and organizations were also invited to attend.

The 2026 Texas Peace Officers' Memorial Ceremony & Candlelight Vigil took place last night, featuring an honor guard procession along Congress Avenue leading to the Memorial Monument on the Capitol Grounds, where the names of our Fallen Texas Peace Officers are forever honored.

This year's ceremony paid tribute to 25 new names and five historical names added to the monument. The Texas Commission on Law Enforcement and the Texas Peace Officers’ Memorial Ceremony Committee express their deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the officers and thank Gov. Greg Abbott for delivering the keynote address and presenting medals to the surviving family members of officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Chairman Pete Flores of the Texas Senate Committee on Criminal Justice and Chairman Jim Wright of the Railroad Commission, along with members of law enforcement, legislative staff, and countless supporters of law enforcement attended the ceremony to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving Texas. The annual ceremony is organized by the Texas Peace Officers’ Memorial Ceremony Committee, established by Texas law in 2017.
