Jollyville Fire Department Emergency First Response

01/27/2026

First of all, all of public safety wants to say Thank You to everyone who hunkered down and stayed off the roadways during this weather event. You not only protected yourselves, you also protected the first responders covering their districts.

Now that the ice is melting away, the thaw is on and the pipes broken by freezing temps are making themselves heard.
As you are out and about in the community, if you see water coming from a neighbor’s house or a local business, please let us know so we can assist in reducing the amount of damage that could be caused by these situations.

Also, the bridges and overpasses are going to be the last to thaw so please be careful on these structures until all of the moisture has evaporated.

Stay Safe!

Our Cold Front Has Arrived!

We got a bunch of rain last night and now it’s a chilly 30 degrees out, which will hopefully warm up a tad prior to the big drop tonight.

Depending on the channel or website you watch, the winter mix/ice event will start somewhere around 6pm and possible end about 4am. It doesn’t show that it will be precipitation that entire time but early morning is when the moisture is supposed to move on, leaving bitter cold and ice accumulations of between one tenth to one quarter of an inch. This isn’t great but it’s a whole lot better than the folks north of us are getting!

If there’s anything positive about this weather event, is that it’s occurring on a weekend and overnight. This should keep a lot of the travel issues down. With that in mind, for the duration of the ice event, please, if you don’t have to travel, stay off the roadways. Ice is hard to distinguish from the roadway so, it may look fine but then you end up in a ditch. Also, the most common injury during ice storms is slips & falls so please be careful if you have to got outside. Just plan that every surface you try to walk on is ice covered.

Hopefully, with a little luck, we will get above freezing tomorrow and the ice issue will go away. But, the severe cold is staying until with us until Wednesday with predicted lows in the low teens and windchills dropping these temps into the low single digits so please plan accordingly.

Some Good News?

The latest report from the weather folks is that the front may be arriving a little later, reducing the amount of ice build-up in our area!

https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/austin/78701/winter-weather-forecast/351193

But, we have been upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning for the weekend as well…

So we all still need to be prepared for the worse and hope for the best.

And keep watching the weather updates, hoping they only get better!

Be Safe!

Weather Models Indicating an Upcoming Ice Event Are Getting More Solid

As we get closer to the weekend, the models are firming up for a weather event in our area.

We are now under a Winter Weather Watch and an Extreme Cold Watch, both starting on Saturday.

https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/austin/78701/weather-warnings/351193?alertId=2905797&areaId=williamson

https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/austin/78701/weather-warnings/351193?alertId=2905801&areaId=williamson

Latest predictions are the possibility of up to ½” of ice over the weekend which, as we all know, is not a good thing!

While this will not be the extended event we had during Icemaggedon, it still will be an issue for travel, possible power loss and significantly cold temperatures over the weekend.

Something I learned while watching every weather channel I could, “Freezing Rain” does not mean little frozen pellets falling from the sky…that’s “Hail”. “Freezing Rain” is rain that falls as a liquid and freezes to whatever it lands on. So “Freezing Rain” is basically what causes ice storms. So, when the weather folks say “Freezing Rain” think “Ice Storm!”

Again, plan for the worst and hope for the best!
Plan for travel disruptions over the weekend
Plan for power disruptions over the weekend
Plan for being stuck at home for a few days
Get weather updates daily – it may get worse or it may get better!

And, if there’s a major winter storm event, do not travel. If you do, you will most likely meet us!

Be Safe!

Potential Winter Storm This Weekend

They’ve been discussing this for a few days, but now, every model they run gets worse!

As of today, the weather guessers are looking at a chance of a winter storm in our area Saturday night into Sunday. This includes extremely cold weather, with lows in near the teens, with windchills into the single digits. The major issue is the 80% chance of rain/winter mix Saturday night. This could bring snow and/or ice issues for the area which may include: bridges, overpasses, stairways, walkways, and, if its cold long enough, accumulations on the roadways. This would be bad….

As of now, the best thing for everyone is to plan for the worst and hope for the best!
Prepare for travel disruptions over the weekend
Prepare for an extended time of being stuck at home
Prepare to not travel for a few days
Get weather updates daily – it may get worse or it may get better!

And, as always, we’ll keep you informed as often as we can…

Here Comes the Cold...Finally!!

After a hot, record-breaking holidays, winter finally returns tonight with overnight temps dropping into the 30’s with windchills into the 20’s. The front is predicted to arrive in the Austin area around 7p with north winds gusting up to 45mph so get ready! On the topic of windchill, people often make the mistake and only look at the predicted temperatures and do not take into account the windchill. Windchills can quickly take the situation from a basic cold night to severely frozen pipes and deadly weather incident. I’ve placed a link below discussing the topic:

https://weather.com/science/weather-explainers/news/2024-12-04-what-is-wind-chill-what-makes-it-so-dangerous

Also, the arctic cold appears to be staying with us until Wednesday so, as always, prepare for the worst but hope for the best. And, if there’s any moisture on the roadways, please be VERY careful on bridges and overpasses.

In regards to staying warm during this arctic blast, please be extremely careful if you decide to use any type of supplemental heating source (fire place, space heater, etc.). Supplemental heating devices are the top causes of residential fires during cold weather events.

And, remember the Freeze Four P’s: Protect Pets, Pipes & Plants!!!!!!!!!!

Cedar Park Fire Department tagged us in this holiday challenge, so now we're doing our part.

As the weather cools down, if you have a chimney, make sure you get it cleaned to prevent possible chimney fires. Chimneys should be cleaned annually by a professional.

Here comes some weather (maybe?)

Depending on which model the weather folks you watch are using, we may get a tiny bit of rain or we may have major flooding issues...

Currently, we are being told that there is an 80% chance of rain tomorrow and more through the weekend but no model agrees on how much and where!

What does this mean? It means that the best thing you can do for your safety is turn on the weather alerts on your phone and stay weather aware of what's going on around you.

And, as always, Turn around, Don't Drown!

Stay Safe!

Halloween Safety from the Red Cross

Halloween is not just for kids anymore. The holiday has become one of the most popular in the U.S. with people of all ages taking part in things like trick-or-treating, decorating homes and attending parties.

The American Red Cross wants everyone to enjoy the festivities safely, so we offer tips for all ages on how to have a great Halloween and stay safe while doing so.

COSTUME SAFETY Trick-or-treaters need to see and be seen.

Use face makeup instead of masks.

Add reflective tape to costumes and trick-or-treat bags. If possible, have everyone wear light-colored clothing.

Use flame-resistant costumes and wigs.

When choosing costumes, stay away from long trailing fabric so no one trips and falls.

Avoid using decorative contact lenses to avoid problems with your eyes.

If carving pumpkins, don’t use candles to light them. Instead, try battery-operated lights or glow sticks.

TRICK OR TREAT SAFETY
A sad statistic - children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween than on any other day of the year

Have your trick or treaters walk only on sidewalks, not in the street.

If there are no sidewalks, walk at the edge of the roadway, facing traffic.

Look both ways before crossing the street, and cross only at the corner.

Don’t cross between parked cars, and don’t cut across yards or use alleys.

Give trick-or-treaters a flashlight to light their way.

A parent or responsible adult should accompany young children door-to-door.

If older children are going alone, plan their route. Set a specific time they should return home. Teach them to only visit homes that have a porch light on, to accept treats at the door and never go inside.

Be cautious around animals, especially dogs.

Walk, don’t run.

Check all goodies before the kids dig in. Make sure to remove loose candy, open packages and remove any choking hazards. Discard any items with brand names that you are not familiar with.

If you are planning to welcome trick-or-treaters to your home, light the area well and sweep leaves from your sidewalks and steps.
Clear obstacles someone could trip over.

ADULT HALLOWEEN SAFETY The number of alcohol-related traffic incidents jumps around Halloween ─ in fact, many Halloween deaths can be linked to drivers who are impaired.

YOUR PETS AND HALLOWEEN If you are going to welcome trick-or-treaters or host a party, keep your pets in a separate area away from the festivities.

Make sure pets can’t get at any Halloween treats – the treats can be toxic for animals.

If you’re considering a costume for your pet, make sure the animal is okay with the idea and that the costume doesn’t limit their movement or hamper their breathing or sight.

Halloween can spook your pets, causing them to run away. Make sure your pet wears a pet ID. If they are going out after dark, make sure they wear a reflective collar and are securely leashed.

Texas Voter Info 2025

Hi There!

It’s time to get out there and give your opinions on the multitude of items on the November ballot. Lots of constitutional changes (17) and, for those of you that live in the City of Austin, a proposed property tax increase.

I’m not here to sway votes…I just wanted everyone to be aware of what’s currently occurring and that you have a chance to make a difference in the future of this great state!

I gathered some quick info and placed the links below to assist everyone with the process:

Per the maps, it also appears that the McNeil High School location is a joint Wilco and Travis County voting location so that’s pretty convenient! Also, the voting locations links have wait times listed so that makes this a pretty simple process…

No matter how you vote, get out there and make your opinion count!
