Captain Anthony F. Lucas helped shape Texas history by drilling the world-famous Lucas Gusher at Spindletop Hill near Beaumont, Texas. 🛢️

Born in Split, Croatia, he arrived in the U.S. in 1879 and later worked as an engineer in Louisiana. While studying the Gulf Coast Region, Lucas became fascinated by the strange mounds scattered across Texas and Louisiana, convinced they hid underground petroleum reserves.

That hunch led him to lease the land at Spindletop Hill. And on January 10, 1901, the Lucas Gusher erupted, producing an estimated 100,000 barrels of oil a day and igniting the Texas oil boom.
