The Free Your Mind Symposium returns to the George Washington Carver Museum for Juneteenth!

Join artist Hakeem Adewumi and Rachel Winston, Black Diaspora Archivist at the University of Texas at Austin, for an intimate conversation about Seeing Further — a mixed-media exhibition exploring Juneteenth as a living Black Southern tradition rooted in Texas mythology, African spirituality, and the supernatural. Hakeem shares the personal history, family objects, and landscape that shaped the work, and what it means to make art that listens to ancestors.

Together, Hakeem and Rachel will sit with a question at the heart of the show: what happens to a regional ethos of liberation when the world claims it as its own? Come prepared for an honest, grounded conversation about memory, place, and what it means for all of us to see further into Juneteenth. Link below to RSVP.

Join us on June 20, 2026 for the Carver's annual Remembrance Ceremony.

We must never forget the spirit and light of our fallen sisters, brothers, and non-binary community members. Through song, prayer, and meditation, we gather in solidarity to honor our Black ancestors and victims of violence in Texas. The Carver is a safe space for communal mourning and grieving as it relates to the ongoing fight for Black liberation.

* Attendees are strongly encouraged to wear all white or bright, neutral colors. *

This portion of the Carver Kickback will begin at 2:30 P.M. in the Boyd Vance Theatre and brings the day to a close with the ringing of the Freedom Bell.
