For years state Republicans have fought to limit access to reproductive health care. Even after being struck down by the US Supreme Court in 2016, over half the state’s abortion clinics are still shut down from the passing of HB2 in 2013. As a champion for justice, Delia led the Austin city council to become the first municipality in the nation to directly fund abortion access. Delia hasn’t been afraid to stand up for what’s right, so that all women have access to reproductive healthcare, no matter their socioeconomic status. Equal justice shouldn’t be determined by the size of your bank account. Yet that’s exactly what happens with money-based bail. Before a trial is held or ever being convicted of a crime, those who can’t pay are still held in jail; away from their families and away from their jobs. Putting them and their families in a precarious financial situation, and continuing a cycle of poverty. On City Council, Delia has fought to right this injustice by reforming the fees and fines system in our Municipal Courts. On Thursday, a federal judge ruled against Dallas County’s strict reliance on cash bail, saying it discriminates against poor people and violates their equal protection rights.
