Lander County has a new roadmap for reducing wildfire risk. 🔥

On Sept. 10, the Lander County Commission adopted the 2026 Community Wildfire Protection Plan, the first major update to the County's CWPP since the original plan was developed in 2005.

The plan draws on wildfire risk assessments completed in 2025, input from local communities and volunteer fire departments and coordination among county, state, federal, Tribal, utility and natural-resource partners. Six public workshops were also held in Battle Mountain, Austin and Kingston during development of the plan.

What does it identify?

Recommendations range from fuel reduction projects around individual communities to improved emergency communications, evacuation planning, firefighter training, defensible-space assistance and more reliable access to water for wildfire response. The plan also calls for a countywide Ready, Set, Go program to improve evacuation communication between residents and first responders.

The work isn't starting from scratch. Nearly 200,000 acres of vegetation treatment have been completed or planned across Lander County since 2010 by state and federal agencies, including mowing, targeted grazing, thinning, seeding and other fuel-management work.

The CWPP is not regulatory and does not mandate projects or actions by private property owners. Instead, it identifies priorities that can move forward as funding, partnerships, landowner participation and other requirements allow. An approved CWPP can also help communities compete for wildfire mitigation funding.

Ever wonder why they come to Battle Mountain?

Teams have traveled from around the world to Lander County this week for the World Human Powered Speed Challenge — but they aren't here by accident.

For 23 of the past 25 years, a five-mile stretch of State Route 305 has been home to one of the world's most specialized speed competitions.
Why here?

SR 305 offers a rare combination: a long, straight course, an elevation near 5,000 feet that helps reduce aerodynamic drag and the calm September conditions competitors need when they're chasing speeds approaching 90 mph.

But there's another part of the story.

Year after year, Battle Mountain has welcomed athletes, engineers, students, crews and volunteers from around the world. Local kids get an up-close look at machines built by some of the world's top engineering teams. Competitors who arrive as rivals help one another along the highway. And for one week each September, a stretch of rural Nevada becomes the place where human-powered speed records can fall.

The 2026 World Human Powered Speed Challenge is underway through Saturday, Sept. 19.

📸 And if you've been out watching this week, we'd love to see what you've seen. Drop your favorite WHPSC photo in the comments.

A new air-medical resource is now formally in place for Lander County.

On Sept. 10, the Lander County Commission approved an agreement with Guardian Flight LLC d/b/a REACH Air Medical Services, establishing the company as the County’s preferred air-medical transportation provider.

The aircraft is based in Battle Mountain, but the service extends across all of Lander County, including Austin and Kingston. It provides emergency air-medical transportation for critically ill or injured patients 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

For residents who may need to be transported to a higher level of care, having an aircraft based locally can reduce the time spent waiting for one to arrive from outside the area. At the meeting, County Manager Bert Ramos noted that previous waits for an aircraft could exceed an hour.

The agreement also provides for coordination and training between Guardian Flight/REACH and Lander County personnel.

Thank you to Lander County EMS, Guardian Flight/REACH, Battle Mountain General Hospital and Gold Mountain Aviation for the work that helped bring this service to the community.
