Announcing MORE things to do and see at Viva Mexico on Saturday, September 12 at the Emma S Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center!

"La Corregidora"
Written and Performed by Samantha Ledezma Montenegro
MACC Auditorium- During Viva Mexico

Samantha Ledezma Montenegro has written an original theater performance for this event. She will play the part of "La corregidora" Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez, a real person from Mexican history who played an often-overlooked part in the Mexican Battle for Independence.

Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez was a woman destined for good manners and after-dinner chats during her famous "gatherings" who had to stay within the limits of tea, poetry and music; she decides to actively participate in politics using her resources and the position of her husband the corregidor to promote and finance the great conspiracy that gave way to the war of independence.

Everything happens in the Domínguez mansion when the conspiracy is discovered and the corregidor locks Josefa up so that she does not give her warning. However, she finds a way to let Ignacio Allende and Padre Hidalgo know and they give the battle cry, the Grito de Dolores, raising the people in arms against the viceroyalty.
