Do you know the history of our state flag? You can learn all about Indiana's (and every other state's) history, symbols, economy, plants, animals, and so much more on our FREE resource, AtoZ in the USA!

"As part of Indiana's centennial celebration, the Indiana General Assembly resolved to adopt a state flag. They asked the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) for help in finding something suitable. The DAR sponsored a contest ultimately won by a man named Paul Hadley, a painter from Mooresville, Indiana. Hadley's design won over 200 other competitors and received a $100 prize.

The flag was officially adopted as the state banner in 1917. The General Assembly did make one change to Hadley's original design. They added the word "Indiana" above the large star that represents Indiana, both to clarify Hadley's intention and to identify the flag.

The Indiana flag has flown unchanged since its adoption. A 1955 statute changed the official term from state banner to state flag, and some design details were clarified to ensure better consistency in production."
