Aurora Regional Fire Museum

Aurora Regional Fire Museum The Aurora Regional Fire Museum is located in Aurora's old Central Fire Station. Visitors can pass a leather fire bucket from the early 1800s.

The museum is open to the public regular hours, and features a variety of interactive exhibits designed to educate and entertain children, families, and firefighters. The museum's primary exhibit, "Getting There, Getting Water, Getting Rescued" traces the evolution of the tools and technology used by firefighters. See the horse stalls and the "real" fire horses. Discover what was found under the f

loor boards of the old central fire station. Marvel at the strange looking Vajen-Bader smoke mask. See and hear how modern fire apparatus clears the streets with sirens, air horns, and devices that change traffic lights green. Watch vintage film clips of firefighters and fire engines on one of five video touch-screens. All this in addition to five pieces of fire apparatus on display in a fully restored 1894 fire station.

We return to our regular hours next week! We will be open Wednesday to Saturday 10am-4pm.
We’ve had an amazing summer of extended Tuesday hours and we hope everyone who visited us on our Summer Tuesdays had a great time!

On this day in 1931 (also a Wednesday!) , there was a fire at the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy (CB&Q) Coach Shop that destroyed the building and its contents. The fire started in the roof of the building, which was actually two old shop buildings that were over 50 years old, connected. These older buildings had wooden beams that allowed the fire to spread rapidly. Despite the fact that firefighters were notified and all 42 firefighters were on the scene quickly the fire was a complete loss. While fighting this fire, Ed Baum fell off a small building and badly sprained his ankle.The destruction of this business meant that 250-300 men were out of work and damages were listed at $574,336. Despite Chief Gramley investigating, the cause was never determined.

On this day in 1970, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Abell presented a 2 gallon leather fire bucket from the Young America Fire Company to Chief Erwin J. Bauman for the museum while Captain James Pini watched.

This bucket is currently on display in our main exhibit Getting There, Getting Water, Getting Rescued.

We also have more information about the early days of the Aurora Fire Department including the Young America Company in our One City, One Department, 170 Years exhibit currently on display in the Charlie and Georgia Goodwin Aurora Room.
