Mantengámonos a salvo.

Throughout the year, our community has been threatened by ICE, but for a while, Aurora did not seem to be a primary target compared to other nearby communities. Recently, Aurora has seen a significant increase in ICE activity and more of our neighbors have been kidnapped.

Just Thursday, I woke up to the news that 2 community members were taken by ICE at the Aurora Transportation Center. Much more ICE activity was confirmed around the city with people being abducted, leaving cars abandoned and house doors wide open, though I do not know the total number of victims of this violent assault on our community. I have always been opposed to what can only be described as domestic terrorism that ICE is committing, but as ICE presence was less significant in Aurora for a while, I was afraid of provoking the federal government and potentially putting a target on Aurora by speaking out as an elected official and others being harmed by my actions.

However, at this point Aurora and all of Chicagoland appears to be a primary target of ICE regardless of what I say and I feel it is my responsibility to at the very least speak up and speak out against the rising violence committed by ICE in our neighborhoods. I consider what ICE is doing to be violent and criminal and if there is any justice in this world, all who are involved in the abductions of our neighbors will be held accountable for their crimes.

Many people in our community are afraid to leave their homes and live the normal lives of dignity they deserve in the “land of the free”. This fear is totally understandable, especially for people who have not been able to gain citizenship due to our broken and inhumane immigration system and for those who do not have white skin as the Supreme Court has now ruled that ICE is allowed to target people based on their perceived race.

But for those of us who are citizens and are less likely to be targeted by ICE, now is not the time to be afraid. The goal of the federal government is to make us be afraid to speak out and resist the horrific violence they are subjecting us to. We must build a support structure to protect our neighbors who are under threat. There are many more of us than there are of them and if we are organized, we are undefeatable. Alone we are weak, but together we are strong and can stand up to ICE.

It will not be easy and I do not know exactly what the next steps will be, but what I do know is that I need to do whatever I can within my power to protect our neighbors from the violence of ICE. Even for those who cannot risk being targeted by state violence, there are many ways for us all to get involved within our means and we each need to find our place. We keep us safe.

Aurora’s greatest strength is our diversity and, as far as I’m concerned, Aurora will always remain a welcoming home for all people. We are all human and our cultural differences are beautiful, not harmful. We celebrate the diverse cultures in Aurora from across the globe. But we cannot simply celebrate the culture of a people and then stay silent when those same people are being targeted and racially profiled by violent federal agents. A true community shares in joy as we celebrate holidays of our neighbors, but a true community also shares in the struggle against injustice when any group in our community is under attack.

If you witness potential ICE activity, remember to remain calm and call the Family Support Network hotline at 855-435-7693 to report it and it will be verified and handled accordingly. And contact the Aurora Rapid Response Team if you would like to request a know your rights training.

There are a lot of fun events happening this weekend in Aurora! Just be aware that the air quality is poor right now from Canadian wildfire smoke.

If you will be enjoying events outside this weekend, remember to be mindful of your health and go inside and take it easy if you are feeling off.

With that being said, I am looking forward to First Friday and the Stolp Island Block Party tonight. Alderman Bañuelos is also hosting a Ward 7 movie night at Middlebury West Park tonight at 8:00.

Have a great weekend and please stay healthy and safe!
